But it turns out that they had picked the wrong bear to mess with, in the wrong place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Newbury has a special reverence for Paddington, as the birthplace of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/06\/28\/books\/michael-bond-dead-paddington-bear.html\" title=\"\">Michael Bond<\/a>, the author of the beloved children\u2019s book series about the genial Peruvian bear and his adopted family in London, the Browns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">So when the men, Daniel Heath and William Lawrence, both 22, pleaded guilty to criminal damage on Tuesday, the judge had some choice words before he sentenced them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cPaddington Bear is a beloved cultural icon with children and adults alike,\u201d the judge, Sam Gooz\u00e9e of Reading Magistrates\u2019 Court, told the men, according to a copy of his remarks released by the court. \u201cHe represents kindness, tolerance and promotes integration and acceptance in our society. His famous label attached to his duffle coat says, \u2018Please look after this bear.\u2019 On the night of 2 March 2025, your actions were the antithesis of everything Paddington stands for.\u201d<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"imageblock-wrapper\">\n<figure class=\"img-sz-small css-nss59b e1g7ppur0\" aria-label=\"media\" role=\"group\"><figcaption data-testid=\"photoviewer-children-caption\" class=\"css-13ytnnu ewdxa0s0\"><span class=\"css-jevhma e13ogyst0\">The damaged statue after it was recovered by the police.<\/span><span class=\"css-14fe1uy e1z0qqy90\"><span class=\"css-1ly73wi e1tej78p0\">Credit&#8230;<\/span><span><span aria-hidden=\"false\">Thames Valley Police\/Cover Images, via Associated Press<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Judge Gooz\u00e9e sentenced the men to 150 hours of community service and ordered them each to pay 2,725 British pounds, or about $3,530, to repair Paddington. \u201cYour actions lacked respect and integrity, two values you should uphold as members of the armed forces,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Both men expressed remorse for the damage that they had done to the bear.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cMr. Lawrence and Mr. Heath deeply regret their actions on the day and immediately accepted responsibility when spoken to by the police,\u201d their lawyer, Tom Brymer, said in an email. \u201cNo doubt this was behavior which was completely out of character.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The statue of Paddington, classically attired in a red bucket hat and blue coat, was one of 23 that were installed last year across the United Kingdom and Ireland to promote the release of the movie \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/13\/movies\/paddington-in-peru-review.html\" title=\"\">Paddington in Peru.<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On March 2, security-camera footage showed two men \u2014 later identified as Mr. Heath and Mr. Lawrence \u2014 approaching Paddington on a dark street. Both men were \u201cunder the influence of alcohol\u201d at the time, the judge said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">After some prying and pulling, the men succeeded in removing Paddington\u2019s facade. They then carried Paddington to a taxi, which took them and the broken bear back to their Air Force base, Judge Gooz\u00e9e said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Officers from the Newbury Neighborhood Policing Team tracked Mr. Heath and Mr. Lawrence to their barracks later that day, arrested them and seized the damaged statue, which had been stashed in the trunk of Mr. Lawrence\u2019s car, the police said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Cracking the case was a point of pride for the local police.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe Paddington Bear statue is a beloved part of Newbury so we did everything we could to locate it and bring the offenders to justice,\u201d Inspector Alan Hawkett of the Newbury Neighborhood Policing Team said in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thamesvalley.police.uk\/news\/thames-valley\/news\/2025\/march\/24-03-2025\/two-men-sentenced-for-damaging-and-stealing-paddington-bear-statue--newbury\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a statement<\/a> on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cAfter a short stay at Newbury police station,\u201d he added, \u201cwe handed the statue back to its owners so it can be restored.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Newbury Business Improvement District, which owns the Paddington statue, is planning to have the bear repaired and restored to his rightful perch on the park bench.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In the meantime, a spokesman said the district had covered the bench with a gazebo tent, partly to protect passers-by from the rough edges on the damaged statue and \u201cpartly so that children wouldn\u2019t see the bear in the broken state.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/25\/world\/europe\/paddington-bear-statue-stolen-raf-engineers.html\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It was shortly after 2 a.m. on March 2, the police said, when two members of the British Royal Air Force approached a statue of Paddington Bear, sitting placidly on a park bench in Newbury, England, and holding his favorite snack: a sandwich dripping with marmalade.
