{"id":266854,"date":"2025-03-26T04:36:10","date_gmt":"2025-03-26T04:36:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.talkwithrattan.com\/index.php\/2025\/03\/26\/assisted-dying-in-doubt-as-rollout-could-be-delayed-until-at-least-2029\/"},"modified":"2025-03-26T04:36:10","modified_gmt":"2025-03-26T04:36:10","slug":"assisted-dying-in-doubt-as-rollout-could-be-delayed-until-at-least-2029","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.talkwithrattan.com\/index.php\/2025\/03\/26\/assisted-dying-in-doubt-as-rollout-could-be-delayed-until-at-least-2029\/","title":{"rendered":"Assisted dying in doubt as rollout could be delayed until at least 2029"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align:center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i3.wp.com\/e3.365dm.com\/25\/02\/768x432\/skynews-assisted-dying-mp-labour_6825821.jpg?20250211170956&amp;ssl=1\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"Assisted dying in doubt as rollout could be delayed until at least 2029\" title=\"Assisted dying in doubt as rollout could be delayed until at least 2029\" \/><\/div><p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component-name=\"ui-article-body\" data-highlight-intro=\"true\">\n<p>Assisted dying may not available in England and Wales until at least 2029 after MPs approved an extension of the rollout period.<\/p>\n<p>An initial two-year &#8220;backstop&#8221; will now increase to four years after the change was proposed by Kim Leadbeater, the Labour MP behind the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Leadbeater said she was disappointed to propose the extension and acknowledged the &#8220;upset&#8221; felt by some supporters of the bill, but said it was &#8220;more important to do this properly than to do it quickly&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The four-year delay, passed by the committee scrutinising the legislation, now means the law is unlikely to be operational until at least 2029 &#8211; the year by which the next general election must take place.<\/p>\n<p>After the vote in the early hours of Wednesday, Ms Leadbeater said the bill will come back to the Commons in a &#8220;safer, fairer, and more workable&#8221; form.<\/p>\n<p>MPs on the committee also voted for assisted dying to be available free on the NHS.<\/p>\n<p>One MP said the extension of the backstop risked the bill being abandoned.<\/p>\n<p>Tom Gordon, a Liberal Democrat MP, told <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2025\/mar\/25\/assisted-dying-law-thrown-into-doubt-as-plans-for-rollout-delayed-by-two-years\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Guardian<\/a><\/strong> that &#8220;delaying implementation risks pushing it beyond the next election, where it could be abandoned altogether&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have thoroughly scrutinised and strengthened this bill, ensuring it is safe and robust.
