In his act, he modified the lyrics of popular Bollywood songs to poke fun at Shinde’s political career and his 2022 rebellion against the Uddhav Thackeray-led MVA government. One of the parodies included the line, “Meri nazar se tum dekho to gaddar nazar wo aaye. Haaye!” (From my perspective, he looks like a traitor).

Live Events

Shiv Sena leaders were quick to react, labelling Kamra’s remarks as offensive. BJP legislator Pravin Darekar took the matter further, filing a breach of privilege notice in the state legislative council, accusing Kamra of making “personal and insulting” comments about Shinde.

Shiv Sena Backlash and Vandalism

The political uproar soon escalated into action. Following Kamra’s performance, Shiv Sena activists vandalised The Habitat Club, where the comedian had performed his set. The police later arrested 12 individuals involved in the incident, but they were granted bail shortly after.

Meanwhile, Shiv Sena MLA Murji Patel filed a complaint against Kamra, leading to an FIR and a police summons for questioning. Kamra had initially requested a week’s time to appear, but his request was rejected.

Despite growing pressure, Kamra has refused to back down. In a statement, he declared, “I will not apologise or hide under the bed. It is not against the law to poke fun at leaders and the circus that is the political system.”

Copyright Dispute Raises Questions Over Free Speech

Beyond the political storm, Kamra’s fight with T-Series has reignited debates over copyright laws and fair use in India. He maintains that his work falls within the legal boundaries of parody and satire, arguing that if his video is removed, it could set a precedent for silencing creative content.

“If you take this video down, every cover song and dance video can be taken down,” he warned.

Supporters, including filmmaker Hansal Mehta and politician Priyanka Chaturvedi, have condemned the backlash against Kamra, calling it an attack on artistic freedom. However, BJP leaders and actor Kangana Ranaut have criticised the comedian for “disrespecting” Shinde.

Shinde himself commented on the controversy, stating, “There is freedom of speech, but there should be limits.” Maharashtra Minister Gulab Patil went a step further, warning Kamra of “consequences” if he did not apologise.

The backlash against Kamra has extended beyond legal troubles. Reports suggest that after his comments on Shinde, Kamra’s phone number was leaked online, leading to an onslaught of harassment. According to sources, he has received over 500 threat calls in recent days.

Kamra’s battle is far from over. As legal proceedings unfold and T-Series continues to restrict his video, the debate over free speech, satire, and artistic expression remains heated. For now, the comedian remains defiant, standing by his jokes despite growing opposition.

The case has sparked a larger conversation about how far comedians can go in critiquing political figures and the role of corporate giants in shaping digital content. Whether Kamra’s special remains accessible or gets permanently taken down, one thing is clear—this controversy is unlikely to fade away anytime soon.

Source link

Comedian Kunal Kamra has lashed out at T-Series after the music label reportedly blocked visibility and monetisation of his stand-up special, Naya Bharat: A Comedy Special, on YouTube.
