{"id":26774,"date":"2024-04-15T08:33:25","date_gmt":"2024-04-15T08:33:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.talkwithrattan.com\/index.php\/2024\/04\/15\/sc-adjourns-medical-bail-plea-of-newsclick-founder-prabir-purkayastha-for-april-22\/"},"modified":"2024-04-15T08:33:25","modified_gmt":"2024-04-15T08:33:25","slug":"sc-adjourns-medical-bail-plea-of-newsclick-founder-prabir-purkayastha-for-april-22","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.talkwithrattan.com\/index.php\/2024\/04\/15\/sc-adjourns-medical-bail-plea-of-newsclick-founder-prabir-purkayastha-for-april-22\/","title":{"rendered":"SC adjourns medical bail plea of NewsClick founder Prabir Purkayastha for April 22"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align:center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/i3.wp.com\/img.etimg.com\/photo\/msid-109307970,imgsize-47404.cms?fit=600,450&amp;ssl=1\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"SC adjourns medical bail plea of NewsClick founder Prabir Purkayastha for April 22\" title=\"SC adjourns medical bail plea of NewsClick founder Prabir Purkayastha for April 22\" \/><\/div>\n<div data-brcount=\"28\">The <a data-ga-onclick=\"Inarticle articleshow link click#News#href\" href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/supreme-court\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Supreme Court<\/a> on Monday adjourned the <a data-ga-onclick=\"Inarticle articleshow link click#News#href\" href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/medical-bail-plea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">medical bail plea<\/a> of <a data-ga-onclick=\"Inarticle articleshow link click#News#href\" href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/prabir-purkayastha\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prabir Purkayastha<\/a>, <a data-ga-onclick=\"Inarticle articleshow link click#News#href\" href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/newsclick-founder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Newsclick founder<\/a> and Editor-in-Chief, lodged in Tihar jail under <a data-ga-onclick=\"Inarticle articleshow link click#News#href\" href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/anti-terror-law\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anti-terror law<\/a>, for April 22.<\/p>\n<p>A bench of Justices BR Gavai and Sandeep Mehta adjourned to next Monday the plea of Purkayashta, seeking bail on medical ground, as senior advocate Kapil Sibal representing him was unavailable.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, the apex court had directed the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (<a data-ga-onclick=\"Inarticle articleshow link click#News#href\" href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/aiims\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AIIMS<\/a>) to set up a medical board to examine the health condition of Purkayastha.<\/p>\n<p>It had asked the AIIMS director to constitute the board and submit a report which shall also consider the jail records and complete medical history of the petitioner.<\/p>\n<p>The direction of the apex court came after Sibal told the bench that the report filed by the prison authorities about his client&#8217;s medical condition was not correct.<\/p>\n<p>Purkayastha had earlier also approached the Supreme Court challenging his arrest under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (<a data-ga-onclick=\"Inarticle articleshow link click#News#href\" href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/uapa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UAPA<\/a>) over alleged Chinese funding to promote anti-national propaganda.He challenged the Delhi High Court&#8217;s October 13, 2023, order upholding the trial court order remanding him to police custody. He has since been remanded to judicial custody.Earlier, NewsClick&#8217;s human resources department head, Amit Chakravarty had withdrawn from the Supreme Court his petition against his arrest.<\/p>\n<p>A Delhi court had allowed Chakravarty to turn an approver in the case lodged against the news portal.<\/p>\n<p>Purkayastha and Chakraborty were arrested by the special cell of the <a data-ga-onclick=\"Inarticle articleshow link click#News#href\" href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/delhi-police\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Delhi police<\/a> on October 3 after it searched 30 locations connected with the online news portal and its journalists in a case filed under the UAPA following allegations that it received money for pro-China propaganda.<\/p>\n<p>Purkayastha and Chakravarty subsequently moved the High Court challenging the arrest as well as the seven-day police custody and sought immediate release as an interim relief.<\/p>\n<p>The High Court had rejected their pleas and said it is of the view that &#8220;the fact that serious offences affecting stability, integrity, sovereignty and national security have been alleged against the petitioner, this Court is not inclined to pass any favorable orders.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to the FIR, a large amount of funding for the news portal allegedly came from China to &#8220;disrupt the sovereignty of India&#8221; and cause disaffection against the country.<\/p>\n<p>The probe agency also alleged that Purkayastha conspired with a group, the People&#8217;s Alliance for Democracy and Secularism (PADS), to sabotage the electoral process during the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/news\/india\/sc-adjourns-medical-bail-plea-of-newsclick-founder-prabir-purkayastha-for-april-22\/articleshow\/109307970.cms\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Supreme Court on Monday adjourned the medical bail plea of Prabir Purkayastha, Newsclick founder and Editor-in-Chief, lodged in Tihar jail under anti-terror law, for April 22.
