The State Bank of India<\/a>‘s New Delhi<\/a> main branch marks its 100th year today. However, it stands as more than a financial institution\u2014it remains a silent witness to history, its records holding the intertwined pasts of India and Pakistan.<\/p>\n

A century ago, a bank branch opened its doors on Parliament Street in Delhi, serving as a financial hub for leaders of pre-independence India. Among its early account holders was Liaquat Ali Khan<\/a>, who, on November 28, 1940, opened an account at the Imperial Bank of India<\/a>. Seven years later, he would become the first Prime Minister of Pakistan. Today, that branch\u2014now the main New Delhi branch of the State Bank of India (SBI<\/a>)\u2014celebrates its 100th year, reported TOI.<\/p>\n

Established on January 4, 1926, as the Raisina Road branch, it was set up to cater to the growing financial needs of British India\u2019s newly designated capital. Over the years, its ledgers recorded the financial transactions of leaders from both sides of a yet-to-be-divided subcontinent. Even before Partition<\/a>, political figures from future India and Pakistan entrusted their finances to this institution, creating a shared legacy now preserved in its archives. <\/p>\n

A Bank of Historical Significance
<\/strong>Beyond its modern multi-storey structure, the branch holds a deep historical connection with South Asia\u2019s political evolution. According to the TOI report, apart from Liaquat Ali Khan, Malik Feroz Khan Noon, who later became Pakistan\u2019s seventh Prime Minister, also maintained an account here, signing the registers in 1943. These century-old ledgers still bear the inked signatures of politicians who would go on to shape the destinies of two nations. <\/p>\n

Royalty and revolutionaries also left their mark here. Rajkumari Amrit Kaur, India\u2019s first health minister and a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi, handled her financial matters at this branch in 1941. Corporate entities like Tata Sons maintained accounts here as early as 1942. Zakir Hussain, India\u2019s third President, signed documents on behalf of Jamia Millia Islamia in 1948, while Dr Rajendra Prasad, India\u2019s first President, used the bank for managing the finances of the Constitution Club. <\/p>\n

Major General Hira Lal Atal managed the Armed Forces Benevolent Fund through this branch in 1949, and Neelam Sanjiva Reddy, who later became India\u2019s President, opened his account here in 1964. The records also include signatures of India\u2019s first Education Minister, Abul Kalam Azad, and key leaders such as CD Deshmukh and Jawaharlal Nehru, who were associated with the International Statistical Conference around 1951. From Colonial Era to Modern Banking
<\/strong>SBI\u2019s Chief General Manager, Delhi Circle, Debasish Mishra, highlighted the bank\u2019s transformation over a century. “Built at a cost of \u20b91.75 lakh, the bank was a financial nerve center with its British-style pillars and sprawling interiors. Today, it contributes nearly 14% of Delhi Circle\u2019s business, handling close to \u20b970,000 crore,” he said. SBI Chairman Challa Sreenivasulu Setty reflected on its continuing role in national service. \u201cRecently, Parliament enacted that all accounts under the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act be maintained at SBI, and this branch opened over 23,000 FCRA accounts during the Covid pandemic,\u201d he stated. <\/p>\n
