The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has blocked the film&#8217;s release in India. They have raised concerns over the movie&#8217;s depiction of police brutality, Islamophobia, and misogyny.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Now, <em>Santosh<\/em>&#8216;s director, Sandhya Suri, has reacted to CBFC&#8217;s directive. She called their decision \u201cdisappointing and heartbreaking\u201d, during a conversation with <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/mar\/26\/santosh-film-blocked-india-police-brutality-cannes\" rel=\"nofollow noindex noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Guardian<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!--MIDTABOOLA--><\/p>\n<p>Sandhya Suri said, \u201cIt was surprising for all of us because I didn&#8217;t feel that these issues were particularly new to Indian cinema or hadn&#8217;t been raised before by other films.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She revealed that CBFC demanded a list of cuts, which were long and wide-ranging. As per the director, removing them from the film was practically \u201cimpossible.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, some of the edits also covered important topics like police conduct and societal woes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was very important to me that the film be released in India, so I did try to figure out if there was a way to make it work. But in the end, it was just too difficult to make those cuts and have a film that still made sense, let alone stayed true to its vision,\u201d Sandhya Suri shared.<\/p>\n<p>She added, \u201cI don&#8217;t feel my film glorifies violence in a way that many other films focusing on the police have done. There&#8217;s nothing sensationalist about it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!--#VuukleAD--><\/p>\n<p>Sandhya Suri admitted to being \u201cnervous\u201d before <em>Santosh&#8217;s<\/em> India premiere, hinting at the film&#8217;s politically sensitive theme. The director, however, emphasised that it was \u201cvitally important\u201d for the audience to witness the issues themselves.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>Santosh<\/em>, led by<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ndtv.com\/entertainment\/shahana-goswami-on-her-film-santosh-facing-a-roadblock-in-india-8016518\"> Shahana Goswami<\/a>, centres around a widowed housewife. After her husband&#8217;s death, she inherits the job of a police constable. Soon, she finds herself embroiled in a murder case of a young Dalit girl.<\/p>\n<p><!--#MIDAD1--><\/p>\n<p>Last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ndtv.com\/entertainment\/all-we-imagine-as-light-santosh-actor-shahana-goswami-win-big-at-asian-film-awards-7940795\"><em>Santosh<\/em><\/a> had its world premiere at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ndtv.com\/entertainment\/cannes-2024-preity-zinta-s-shares-a-warm-note-for-dear-friend-santokh-sivan-5764128\">77th Cannes Film Festival <\/a>in the Un Certain Regard section.
