But she has proved elusive to recapture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The tale begins in November 2023 when a couple took their pet miniature dachshund, Valerie, to Kangaroo Island off the coast of Adelaide. But Valerie escaped from her pen and rushed off into the bush.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The couple scrapped their plans and searched for their pet for five days with the help of locals before finally giving up and returning to their home in New South Wales.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt was like finding a needle in a haystack,\u201d Valerie\u2019s owner Josh Fishlock told <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sPzsgPlSvYQ\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">the \u201cToday\u201d show in Australia.<\/a><\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"imageblock-wrapper\">\n<figure class=\"img-sz-small css-nss59b e1g7ppur0\" aria-label=\"media\" role=\"group\"><figcaption data-testid=\"photoviewer-children-caption\" class=\"css-13ytnnu ewdxa0s0\"><span class=\"css-jevhma e13ogyst0\">A surveillance image of Valerie. Its Aboriginal name is Karta Pintingga, meaning \u201cisland of the dead.\u201d Given Valerie\u2019s predicament, we\u2019re going to stick with Kangaroo Island.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Now, more than a year after Valerie\u2019s disappearance, hope has sprung. \u201cBased on firsthand accounts and video evidence, we now know that Valerie is alive,\u201d <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/kangalarescue\/posts\/pfbid0XSNSS2ppQY9Kf3soFWJKVCm6ysyxU4uzVLQJNam6eXERNneaxSbe3i4t5C3AcyHgl\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Kangala Wildlife Rescue<\/a> said in a statement on social media last week. She was spotted about 10 miles from where she disappeared, in Stokes Bay, and was identified, in part, by her pink collar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Efforts are now underway to rescue the dachshund, but that has proved difficult. \u201cShe runs at the first sign of humans or vehicles and despite the best efforts of dedicated island locals, Valerie has been impossible to catch,\u201d the wildlife rescue said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe are using surveillance and various trapping and luring methods in the area she was last seen to try and bring her home,\u201d the statement said. \u201cThis is a tiny dog in a huge area, and we will need help from the public to report any sightings and a lot of luck.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On Thursday, a man who identified himself as \u201cJared, one of the Kangala team members that\u2019s involved in the rescue mission for Valerie,\u201d offered <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/kangalarescue\/videos\/9477047562409522\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a heartening update in a video update<\/a>: \u201cWe have seen her. We\u2019ve managed to narrow down the search area to one specific point.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe were initially skeptical, but we kept getting more and more sightings,\u201d Mr. Fishlock told \u201cToday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Her other owner, Georgia Gardner, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2025\/mar\/26\/miniature-dachshund-valerie-lost-kangaroo-island-south-australia-found-alive\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">told The Guardian<\/a>: \u201cShe was not a very outside, rough-and-tough dog. To think that she even went one night outside in the rain, oh my gosh. To think that she\u2019s gone a year and a half is incredible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">While the first image of a dachshund might be of a cute little wiener dog, the breed has some real survival skills.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cDachshunds aren\u2019t built for distance running, leaping, or strenuous swimming, but otherwise these tireless hounds are game for anything,\u201d <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.akc.org\/dog-breeds\/dachshund\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">the American Kennel Club says<\/a> in its description of the breed. \u201cBred to be an independent hunter of dangerous prey, they can be brave to the point of rashness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The wildlife rescue said, \u201cWe hope to be able to update you all with an amazing outcome.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/28\/world\/australia\/dachshund-dog-australia-island.html\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A dachshund lost in Australia is still alive after more than a year, and still apparently wearing her pink collar.
