India has swiftly launched ‘Operation Brahma<\/a>‘ to assist Myanmar after a devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake shook the country, claiming over 1,644 lives and reducing buildings to rubble. The large-scale humanitarian mission includes rescue teams, medical aid, and relief supplies. Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Myanmar\u2019s military chief, Min Aung Hlaing, expressing solidarity. In a post on X, he said, “Spoke with Senior General H E Min Aung Hlaing of Myanmar. Conveyed our deep condolences at the loss of lives in the devastating earthquake. As a close friend and neighbour, India stands in solidarity with the people of Myanmar in this difficult hour.”<\/p>\n

India\u2019s Immediate Response: Humanitarian Aid on the Ground<\/h2>\n

India wasted no time in mobilising aid. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reaffirmed India\u2019s commitment, stating, “It is our policy to be the first responder.” The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) deployed an 80-member team equipped with concrete cutters, drill machines, plasma cutters, and other rescue tools. The first batch of relief supplies, including essential medicines, sleeping bags, blankets, and food, was flown to Yangon early Saturday morning. Indian Ambassador Abhay Thakur handed over the aid to Yangon Chief Minister U Soe Thein.<\/p>\n

In a special briefing on Operation Brahma by the Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has committed all possible support from India to earthquake-hit Myanmar, adding that India has always been the first responder in such situations.<\/p>\n

“A massive earthquake struck Myanmar yesterday around afternoon time. We all are aware of the kind of destruction that it has left. Massive loss of life and property has been reported. Soon after the tragedy struck Myanmar, our Prime Minister conveyed his concerns and expressed that India was ready to provide all possible support to the people of Myanmar and the government of Myanmar in this hour of crisis,” he said.<\/p>\n

Jaiswal added that when India says ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’, India also means it. “When we say the world is one family, Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, we also want to mean it. We want to prove that by action and therefore, you know, we are very humbled when we have this opportunity to respond to a crisis such as what has happened in Myanmar and extend our support to people,” he said.<\/p>\n

Indian Army Deploys Specialised Medical Task Force<\/h2>\n

In a swift response, the Indian Army has mobilised a specialised medical task force to provide urgent humanitarian assistance. A 118-member team from the elite Shatrujeet Brigade Medical Responders, led by Lieutenant Colonel Jagneet Gill, is set to take off to Myanmar shortly, carrying essential medical equipment and supplies. The Airborne Angels Task Force is trained to deliver advanced medical and surgical care in disaster-affected zones.<\/p>\n

As part of the mission, the Indian Army will set up a 60-bed Medical Treatment Centre to provide immediate care to those injured in the disaster. The facility will be equipped to handle trauma cases, emergency surgeries, and essential medical services to support Myanmar\u2019s strained healthcare system, according to the Indian Army.<\/p>\n

Naval and Air Efforts in Full Swing<\/h2>\n

Two Indian naval ships, INS Satpura and INS Savitri, carrying 40 tonnes of humanitarian aid, have reached Myanmar. Two additional ships are set to follow. A field hospital with 118 medical personnel from Agra is being airlifted to provide immediate assistance.<\/p>\n

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar confirmed the developments, posting on X: “Operation Brahma: Indian Navy ships INS Satpura & INS Savitri are carrying 40 tonnes of humanitarian aid and headed for the port of Yangon.”<\/p>\n

India has also sent a C-130J military transport aircraft with 15 tonnes of relief materials. The supplies include water purifiers, solar lamps, generator sets, and tents. Jaishankar later posted, “#OperationBrahma gets underway. First tranche of humanitarian aid from India has reached the Yangon Airport in Myanmar.”<\/p>\n

India Leads International Relief Efforts<\/h2>\n

The first C-130 aircraft landed in Naypyidaw, Myanmar, where the NDRF team was received by Indian Ambassador Abhay Thakur and Ambassador Maung Maung Lynn, Ambassador-at-Large from Myanmar\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. India is the first country to bring rescue personnel to the capital. Due to the extensive damage caused by the earthquake, Naypyidaw Airport is still not fully functional.<\/p>\n

The NDRF team is scheduled to proceed to Mandalay early tomorrow morning, making India the first country to deploy a rescue team to the region for active relief operations, according to the MEA\u2019s XP Division.<\/p>\n

Why the Name ‘Operation Brahma’?<\/h2>\n

MEA officials explained that the mission is named after Brahma, the Hindu god of creation, symbolising India\u2019s role in helping Myanmar rebuild after the disaster.<\/p>\n

The Next 48 Hours Are Critical<\/h2>\n

Commandant PK Tiwary of the 8th NDRF battalion is leading the Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) team, accompanied by trained canines to assist in locating survivors.<\/p>\n

NDRF Deputy Inspector General (Operations) Mohsen Shahedi underscored the urgency of the situation, stating, “The next 24-48 hours are very crucial for the force to get gainfully engaged and for their active involvement on the ground.”<\/p>\n
