The war <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/18\/world\/middleeast\/israel-strikes-gaza-cease-fire-hamas.html\" title=\"\">restarted two weeks ago<\/a> after a monthslong cease-fire collapsed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In the past, the Israeli military has ordered evacuations ahead of both aerial attacks and ground maneuvers that it has said were targeting Hamas.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Avichay Adraee, the Israeli military\u2019s Arabic-language spokesman, on Monday posted a map of the affected areas on his social media accounts, including Rafah and parts of neighboring Khan Younis. He said Palestinians must relocate to shelters in a costal region to the north.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Israel\u2019s military \u201cis returning to fighting with great force to take out the capabilities of terrorists organizations in these areas,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Earlier this month, Mr. Adraee announced an evacuation order for some neighborhoods in Rafah, and the maps he posted on Monday again included those.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It was not clear how many people were still in Rafah when Mr. Adraee made his post and how many intended to follow his instructions. While hundreds of thousands of people lived there before the war, wide swathes of the city have since been reduced to rubble.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Over the past two weeks, Mr. Adraee has <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/23\/world\/middleeast\/gaza-israel-rafah.html\" title=\"\">issued evacuations orders<\/a> for other parts of Gaza, but many residents of those areas have seemingly ignored them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Since the start of the war ignited by the Hamas-led October 2023 attack on Israel, Palestinians in Gaza have been repeatedly displaced by the fighting \u2014 a miserable experience that has forced many people to live in crowded makeshift shelters next to strangers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Israeli military resumed its operations against Hamas in Gaza on March 18 after Israel and Hamas failed to reach an agreement to extend a cease-fire that started in January.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Israel and Hamas have been speaking to mediators about <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/30\/world\/middleeast\/israel-hamas-ceasefire-gaza.html\" title=\"\">a potential deal<\/a> to restore the cease-fire, but a breakthrough has not yet been achieved.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/31\/world\/middleeast\/gaza-israel-rafah-evacuation-order.html\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Israeli military issued a sweeping evacuation order for the southern Gaza Strip on Monday, signaling it could relaunch intensive operations in the area.
