But by early last year, when her daughter was 8 years old, it filled her with dread. When she talked to other parents, \u201ceveryone universally said, \u2018Yes, it\u2019s a nightmare, but you\u2019ve got no choice,\u2019\u201d recalled Ms. Greenwell, 41.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She decided to test that. A friend, Clare Fernyhough, had shared her concerns about the addictive qualities of smartphones and the impact of social media on mental health, so they created a WhatsApp group to strategize. Then Ms. Greenwell, who lives in rural Suffolk, in the east of England, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C25Tt2EoVe4\/?hl=en\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">posted her thoughts on Instagram<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWhat if we could switch the social norm so that in our school, our town, our country, it was an odd choice to make to give your child a smartphone at 11,\u201d she wrote. \u201cWhat if we could hold off until they\u2019re 14, or 16?\u201d She added a link to the WhatsApp group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The post went viral. Within 24 hours the group was oversubscribed with parents clamoring to join. Today, more than 124,000 parents of children in more than 13,000 British schools have <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/parentpactresults.smartphonefreechildhood.co.uk\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">signed<\/a> a pact created by Smartphone Free Childhood, the charity set up by Ms. Greenwell, her husband, Joe Ryrie, and Ms. Fernyhough. It reads: \u201cActing in the best interests of my child and our community, I will wait until at least the end of Year 9 before getting them a smartphone.\u201d (Year 9 is equivalent to the American eighth grade.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The movement aligns with a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.moreincommon.org.uk\/our-work\/research\/phoning-it-in\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">broader shift in attitudes in Britain<\/a>, as evidence mounts of the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/02\/27\/briefing\/phones-mental-health.html\" title=\"\">harms posed<\/a> to developing brains by smartphone addiction and algorithm-powered social media. In one <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.moreincommon.org.uk\/our-work\/research\/phoning-it-in\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">survey<\/a> last year the majority of respondents \u2014 69 percent \u2014 felt social media negatively affected children under 15. Nearly half of parents said they struggled to limit the time children spent on phones.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Meanwhile the police and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mi5.gov.uk\/director-general-ken-mccallum-gives-latest-threat-update\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">intelligence services<\/a> have warned of a torrent of extreme and violent content <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/25\/world\/europe\/online-gangs-teenage-boys-violence.html\" title=\"\">reaching children<\/a> online, a trend examined in the hit TV show <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/11\/arts\/television\/adolescence-netflix.html\" title=\"\">Adolescence<\/a>, in which a schoolboy is accused of murder after being exposed to online misogyny. It became Britain\u2019s <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/tv-and-radio\/2025\/mar\/25\/netflixs-adolescence-makes-tv-history-in-the-uk\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">most watched<\/a> show, and on Monday, Prime Minister Keir Starmer met <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/downing-street-opens-doors-to-adolescence-creators-for-vital-discussion-on-protecting-our-children\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">with its creators<\/a> in Downing Street, telling them he had watched it with his son and daughter. But he also said: \u201cThis isn\u2019t a challenge politicians can simply legislate for.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Other governments in Europe have acted to curb children\u2019s smartphone use. In February, Denmark <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/feb\/25\/denmark-to-ban-mobile-phones-in-schools-and-after-school-clubs\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">announced plans to ban smartphones in schools<\/a>, while France barred smartphones in elementary schools in 2018. Norway plans to enforce a minimum age on social media.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">So far Britain\u2019s government has appeared wary of intervening. Josh MacAlister, a Labour lawmaker, attempted to introduce a legal requirement to make all schools in England smartphone free. But the bill was <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/government-accused-of-gutting-potential-bill-to-ban-children-from-social-media-13323350\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">watered down<\/a> after the government made clear it would not support a ban, arguing that principals should make the decision.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Some parents feel the need to act is urgent, especially as technology companies, including Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, and X, formerly Twitter, have <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/07\/technology\/meta-fact-checking-facebook.html\" title=\"\">ended fact-checking operations<\/a>, which many experts say will allow misinformation and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/12\/02\/technology\/twitter-hate-speech.html\" title=\"\">hate speech to flourish<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe don\u2019t have years for things to change,\u201d said Vicky Allen, 46, a mother from Henfield in southern England. \u201cIt does feel like it needs to be us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She and a friend, Julia Cassidy, 46, successfully campaigned for their children&#8217;s elementary school to limit phone use after Ms. Cassidy watched a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2024\/dec\/17\/children-swiped-channel-4-smartphones-mental-health-addiction\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Channel 4 documentary<\/a> about smartphones in schools, and then came across Smartphone Free Childhood. Ms. Cassidy was going to give her son a phone when he turned 11, but said, \u201cI\u2019ve just done a very big U-turn.\u201d Now, she plans to give him a phone that can be used only for calls and texts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The power of parents collectively delaying smartphones is key, Ms. Greenwell said, because it insulates children from peer pressure. \u201cThis problem isn\u2019t that complicated,\u201d she said. \u201cIf you have other people around you who are also doing the same thing, it\u2019s actually amazingly, beautifully simple.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-9a279eb\">\u2018Most people just want to keep their children safe\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On a recent Friday morning, dozens of parents gathered in the auditorium of Colindale Primary School in north London for a presentation by Nova Eden, a regional leader for Smartphone Free Childhood.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She described startling data \u2014 that the average 12-year-old in Britain spends 21 hours a week on a smartphone, for example, and that 76 percent of 12- to 15-year-olds spend most of their free time on screens. She also talked about emerging research on the impact of smartphone use.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Eden cited studies showing rates of anxiety, depression and self-harm among teenagers spiking dramatically since social media was introduced. \u201cThese children are struggling and they need our help,\u201d Ms. Eden said. \u201cI know how hard it is, but we need to be the ones that stand up and say, this is not good for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Eden, 44, described struggling to find the right balance for her own children, ages 5, 10 and 13. She said it was the campaigning of Ian Russell, whose daughter <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/10\/01\/business\/instagram-suicide-ruling-britain.html\" title=\"\">Molly took her own life<\/a> after viewing suicide-related content on Instagram and other social media sites, that drove her to get involved. She had just given her own 13-year-old a phone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cAt that time, I was going through this with my child, and seeing the change in him and his friends,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Jane Palmer, the principal of the Colindale school, acknowledged that some parents have been skeptical of limiting smartphone use, or of banning the devices from school entirely, as her school will do from September.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Some argue the devices can provide social independence and allow them to contact their children in an emergency. Others feel parental controls go far enough in ensuring safety online.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-7\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But the conversations among parents had begun to make way for change, Ms. Palmer said. During the presentation, she described how a former student had died by suicide after being bullied online.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt can be tricky, and of course not everyone is going to support it,\u201d she said of the ban. \u201cBut at the end of the day, I think most people just want to keep their children safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-8\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Colindale is in the borough of Barnet, which in February announced plans to become the first <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/uk\/social-media\/article\/barnet-all-schools-smartphone-free-986pqcgnr\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">borough in Britain<\/a> to ban smartphones in all its public schools. The initiative will affect some 63,000 children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Eton, one of Britain\u2019s most elite private schools, announced last year that new students would be <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c06k33j1dzlo\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">banned<\/a> from bringing smartphones and would instead be issued with Nokia handsets that can only text and make calls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In Suffolk, the founders of the Smartphone Free Childhood initiative are aware that their success in attracting parents to their cause is partly thanks to social media and messaging apps on which they have spread the word.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThere are loads of positive things about this technology,\u201d Mr. Ryrie said. \u201cWe\u2019re not trying to say that technology is bad, just that we need to have a conversation as a society about when it\u2019s appropriate for children to have unrestricted access to this stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<br \/><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/01\/world\/europe\/smartphone-ban-schools-uk-childhood.html\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The idea of getting her eldest child a smartphone had long felt inevitable, said Daisy Greenwell.
