Kolkata: Eight people, including four children and women, were killed in a blast in a firecracker factory in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district\u2019s Patharpratima on Monday night, ADG South Bengal Supratim Sarkar confirmed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe house owners are Chandranath and Tushar Banik and cases have been started against them under Clauses 287, 288, 105 (Culpable Homicide amounting to Murder), 110 and 125 of Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS). Cases have been started under the Clauses 24 & 25 Fire Services Act,\u201d Supratim Sarkar said. The incident occurred in Patharpratima\u2019s Dholahat village.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will find out why the firecrackers were stacked inside the home and the vicinity of the manufacturing factory. It was an accidental fire and explosion, causing the death of eight persons, including four children and women,\u201d Sarkar said. <\/p>\n

\u201cAnother woman was injured and she was transferred to SSKM hospital in Kolkata where she succumbed to her injuries,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n

Post-mortem process of eight bodies has been conducted in Kakdwip Sub-divisional Hospital. The bodies were completely burnt and there were explosives still here and there in the surrounding area,\u201d locals told media persons.<\/p>\n

\u201cForensic Science team will do their work and we will wait for their report. In the primary probe, we cannot decipher the reason of the fire as they have died. Whatever was the storage of fire crackers, we follow the protocol that PO should not be tampered. The Forensic Science team will work accordingly,\u201d the ADG South Bengal elaborated.Police are trying to identify the manufacturing factory in the vicinity of the house. Earlier, the same Chandranath Banik was arrested in 2005.\u201cThe fire-cracker factory was running for the last ten years. We will hold a meeting with firecracker industry unions. Firecracker Storage should be outside the periphery of the neighbourhood. Safe storage is a priority which are not populated,\u201d Sarkar noted.<\/p>\n

Sarkar stressed that many people are associated with fire factory industry and there is lack of awareness. In the recent past, West Bengal Police emphasized on safe storage related awareness from people. <\/p>\n

There were similar blasts in Bhupatinagar, Egra and other places in the state. BJP attacked the ruling government over the recent blasts. In February this year, four persons were killed and several others were injured in a firecracker factory blast at Nadia district\u2019s Kalyani. In 2023, 9 persons were killed in a blast at an illegal firecracker factory at East Midnapore district\u2019s Egra.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow probably Rs. 2 lakhs will be announced for the next of kin of the victims, and a week later, people will move on to the next news, forgetting this incident, till the next tragedy takes place. This state government holds no accountability for such incidents. Mamata Banerjee, who is also in charge of the state police department, is to be blamed for allowing this to happen,\u201d Adhikari said.<\/p>\n

It is crucial to determine the origins of these explosives, hold those responsible accountable, and dismantle any networks involved in illicit arms and bomb production,” Majumdar wrote.
