{"id":271713,"date":"2025-04-01T21:20:44","date_gmt":"2025-04-01T21:20:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.talkwithrattan.com\/index.php\/2025\/04\/01\/grooming-inquiry-lawyer-asked-home-office-do-you-still-want-me\/"},"modified":"2025-04-01T21:20:44","modified_gmt":"2025-04-01T21:20:44","slug":"grooming-inquiry-lawyer-asked-home-office-do-you-still-want-me","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.talkwithrattan.com\/index.php\/2025\/04\/01\/grooming-inquiry-lawyer-asked-home-office-do-you-still-want-me\/","title":{"rendered":"Grooming inquiry lawyer asked Home Office &#8216;do you still want me?&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align:center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/1024\/branded_news\/fe94\/live\/35764780-0f36-11f0-b234-07dc7691c360.png?ssl=1\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"Grooming inquiry lawyer asked Home Office &#8216;do you still want me?&#8217;\" title=\"Grooming inquiry lawyer asked Home Office &#8216;do you still want me?&#8217;\" \/><\/div><p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">A barrister tasked with helping to develop local inquiries into child grooming gangs has revealed he asked a government official &#8220;do you still want me?&#8221;, amid uncertainty over his role. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">In January, the government announced that Tom Crowther KC would work in partnership with the Home Office on the issue.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">But during a Commons committee hearing on Tuesday, he suggested there had been little progress nearly three months on.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">The Home Office has been approached for comment.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">Mr Crowther chaired <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-shropshire-61983584\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" rel=\"noopener\">the inquiry into child sex abuse in Telford, Shropshire,<!-- --><\/a> which in 2022 found more than 1,000 girls had been abused in the town over a period of 30 years amid<!-- --><b id=\"\" class=\"sc-7dcfb11b-0 kVRnKf\"> <!-- --><\/b>&#8220;shocking&#8221;<!-- --><b id=\"\" class=\"sc-7dcfb11b-0 kVRnKf\"> <!-- --><\/b>failures by the police and local council, according to the report.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">The issue was thrust into the spotlight once again earlier this year by tech billionaire Elon Musk, when he used his X social media platform to call for the UK government to set up a national inquiry into it.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">The Conservatives and some Labour MPs joined calls for an inquiry and on 6 January Home Secretary Yvette Cooper announced Mr Crowther had agreed to work with the government and local councils on the issue of child grooming gangs.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">Giving further details on 16 January, Cooper said Mr Crowther would work with the Home Office to &#8220;develop a new effective framework for victim-centred, locally-led inquiries&#8221;, starting with Oldham council in Greater Manchester, and four other pilot areas &#8211; which have not yet been named.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">Speaking to the Commons Home Affairs Committee on Tuesday about the impact of the Telford report and how it can be used as a template for wider child sexual exploitation inquiries, Mr Crowther said the announcement of his role in January came just hours after he was offered it over the phone by a minister. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">He told MPs of how he had asked officials and ministers for further details on what he would be required to do on several occasions. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">In a phone call on 14 February with a Home Office official, Mr Crowther asked: &#8220;Do you still want me?&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">In response, he said he was told the framework for locally-led inquiries would be drafted by ministers and advisers but his comments would be &#8220;welcome&#8221;. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">He said the official assured him there would be a follow-up email the following day but this never came. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">Mr Crowther said he was now due to have a meeting with the Home Office on Wednesday. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">He said he had taken it upon himself to meet the Oldham council leader and <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c0egdv9j10lo\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" rel=\"noopener\">last month it was confirmed he would lead the inquiry there<!-- --><\/a>.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">But Mr Crowther told MPs he was unsure whether the locations of the other locally-led inquiries would be announced by Easter. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">A separate nationwide review by Baroness Louise Casey, examining the demographics of grooming gangs and their victims, as well as the &#8220;cultural drivers&#8221;
