Patnaik had also served in Dhaka and Beijing early in his career.<\/p>\n<p>Ottawa has been in touch with New Delhi on measures to improve ties, ET has learnt.<\/p>\n<p>India, meanwhile, has been clear in its demands on action against Sikh extremists. India in October last year withdrew high commissioner <a ref=\"dofollow\" data-ga-onclick=\"Inarticle articleshow link click#News#href\" href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/sanjay-verma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sanjay Verma<\/a> and some diplomats from Ottawa, rejecting allegations of them being \u201cpersons of interest\u201d in an investigation into a murder case (of Khalistani extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.<\/p>\n<h2>Trudeau\u2019s Soft Attitude<\/h2>\n<p>New Delhi had described the accusations as \u201cpreposterous imputations\u201d raised as part of a political agenda, and told the <a ref=\"dofollow\" data-ga-onclick=\"Inarticle articleshow link click#News#href\" href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/canadian-government\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canadian government<\/a> that \u201cbaseless targeting\u201d of Indian diplomats and officials was unacceptable.<\/p>\n<div style=\"display:none;\" data-ga-impression=\"Events_widget_$pagename#Impression#url\" class=\"liveEventMain_widget custom_ad\">\n<div class=\"topContain\">\n<div class=\"imgBox\"><\/div>\n<h3 class=\"logoTitle\">Live Events<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/live_events_widget.cms?pagename=articlepotime:1--><br \/>It was also underlined that in an atmosphere of extremism and violence, the then <a data-ga-onclick=\"Inarticle articleshow link click#News#href\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/panache\/panache-people-101\/justin-trudeau\/profileshow\/85618066.cms\" rel=\"noopener\">Justin Trudeau<\/a> government\u2019s actions endangered the safety of the diplomats in Canada. \u201cWe have no faith in the current Canadian government\u2019s commitment to ensure their security. Therefore, the government of India has decided to withdraw the high commissioner and other targeted diplomats and officials,\u201d the foreign ministry had announced.India has often held Trudeau and his soft attitude towards Khalistani extremists responsible for deterioration in the ties between the two countries. High commissioner Verma, before departing from Ottawa, accused Trudeau of ruining the bilateral ties for political gains. In an interview with Canada\u2019s private broadcaster CTV, Verma said: \u201cCanada didn\u2019t follow the practice which should have been there. Evidence should have been shared first, but someone (Trudeau) decided to stand in Parliament and talk about a thing for which he himself has said there was no hard evidence.\u201dAccording to him, the evidence being cited by Canada was hearsay. \u201cI know, for sure, that they go from one person to the other, asking them about the hearsay.
