The Noida Authority<\/a> has approved a proposal to build a second expressway between Noida and Greater Noida<\/a>, addressing the increasing traffic congestion in the area. The approval came after extensive discussions on the project\u2019s need, design, and alignment during the board meeting held last week, a TOI report stated.<\/p>\n

Two Potential Designs Under Consideration<\/h2>\n

The project is now moving forward with two options on the table: an eight-lane ground-level expressway or a six-lane elevated road along the Yamuna River<\/a>\u2019s embankments, running from the Okhla barrage (near Kalindi Kunj) to the Yamuna Expressway. This alternative route has been in the planning stages for some time, but with traffic on the Noida Expressway<\/a> surging, especially due to recent residential and commercial growth, and the upcoming Noida International Airport<\/a> opening this year, the urgency to build the new expressway has increased.<\/p>\n

Traffic Surge Drives Need for New Expressway<\/h2>\n

Noida\u2019s traffic congestion is a direct result of rapid development in residential, industrial, and commercial sectors, as well as a population surge in Greater Noida post-Covid. As a result, the Noida Expressway is frequently congested, with traffic reaching peak levels throughout the day. There are concerns that unless a bypass is built, the expressway will face the same traffic bottlenecks seen on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway during rush hours.<\/p>\n

The new expressway is seen as a key solution to this issue, with traffic volume expected to increase in the coming years due to the ongoing development of the Noida International Airport in Jewar, along with industrial and housing projects along the Yamuna Expressway and in Greater Noida.<\/p>\n

Plans for Route and Infrastructure<\/h2>\n

The proposed expressway will stretch from the Okhla barrage to the Yamuna Expressway via the Hindon-Yamuna doab. This route will take into account the existing road infrastructure along the Yamuna marginal bund, which is currently managed by the irrigation department. There is a four-lane road running 11 kilometers between Okhla barrage and the irrigation drain, and the 14-kilometer Hindon-Yamuna doab bund road runs parallel to several sectors in Noida.<\/p>\n

The expressway will require careful planning for entry and exit points, loops, and underpasses. A key interchange point will be located at Sector 168, where the new expressway will connect to the Faridabad-Noida-Ghaziabad (FNG) Expressway. At Sector 150, it will link to the main road between Sector 149A and Sector 150. A comprehensive traffic survey and feasibility study will be conducted before a detailed project report (DPR) is created. <\/p>\n

Plans for Collaboration with NHAI<\/h2>\n

Noida is also looking to involve the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) in the project. However, this would require designating the expressway as a national highway. If this plan does not materialize, Noida, Greater Noida, and Yamuna Expressway authorities may take the initiative to construct the road themselves. One proposal under consideration is the creation of a special purpose vehicle (SPV) formed by these three authorities. The idea for a Noida Expressway bypass was first proposed in November 2023, with Noida Authority initially seeking NHAI’s involvement in construction. However, NHAI expressed its inability to take on the project at that time.
