Spanish actor Karla Sof\u00eda Gasc\u00f3n, known for the Oscar-nominated film Emilia Perez,<\/a> <\/strong>recently appeared in Madrid to promote her new book <\/span>Lo que queda de m\u00ed<\/span> (\u201cWhat\u2019s Left of Me\u201d). After days of silence, the actor<\/span> finally addressed the backlash over resurfaced tweets that were seen as racist and Islamophobic by many. Karla said that she was the victim of a targeted attack which was focused on derailing her career. She claimed that she was \u201cless racist than Gandhi\u201d but did not elaborate more on the statement. \u201c<\/span>No one has to forgive me for anything,\u201d she reportedly told <\/span>El Mundo<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Gasc\u00f3n\u2019s new book is part autobiography, part fiction. She originally published it in Mexico but updated it after her recent experience of being \u201ccancelled.\u201d The book includes stories from her successful career in Mexico and a complicated romance with a senator. \u201cIt\u2019s not a traditional memoir,\u201d she said. \u201cSome things are true, some aren\u2019t. Readers will have to guess.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Gasc\u00f3n made history as the first transgender woman to be nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for her role in Emilia P\u00e9rez, also starring\u00a0 Zoe Saldana and Selena Gomez<\/a> in key roles. The film won big at Cannes, and Gasc\u00f3n was gaining recognition across the world. But soon after her success, some old tweets from her past resurfaced that got her a lot of backlash. Netflix dropped her from its Oscar campaign and even her co-stars distanced themselves from her.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Madrid, when reporters asked if she felt people had forgiven her, she replied bluntly, \u201cNobody has to forgive me for anything.\u201d She maintained that if anyone felt hurt by things she said, they should talk to her directly. \u201cWhen I ask people what it is about me that offends them, they can\u2019t even answer,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gasc\u00f3n believes she was targeted on purpose as tweets that resurfaced were from 2016. \u201cIt\u2019s clear there was a campaign against me,\u201d she said and added, \u201cThey kept going until they got what they wanted.\u201d In her remarks to EL Mundo, the actor added,\u00a0 \u201cThey say I\u2019m far-right or racist. But all my life, I\u2019ve fought against that. When I was younger, I fought with skinheads.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLess racist than Gandhi\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The star from Alcobendas spoke about her feelings after being cancelled, saying, \u201cI\u2019m going to give you the headline: I\u2019m less racist than Gandhi and less Vox than Echenique.\u201d The statement made her a trending topic on social media in the next few hours. She claimed that people tried to paint her as prejudiced during what she calls \u201ca social media massacre.\u201d <\/span>She also made it clear that while she respects Muslim people, she strongly opposes fanaticism and terrorism. \u201cI have enormous respect for Muslims,\u201d she said and added, \u201cBut not for the terrible things done in the name of religion.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Oscar snub<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Despite her historic Oscar nomination, Gasc\u00f3n wasn\u2019t allowed on the main red carpet. \u201cThey made me go somewhere else,\u201d she explained, according to Euro news. \u201cI only realised later I had skipped the carpet. They wanted me to be a robot, someone perfect. But I\u2019m not perfect, and I don\u2019t want to be.\u201d She added, \u201cArt comes from human imperfection. I don\u2019t represent anyone but myself.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n
