Union Minister Piyush Goyal<\/a> took a dig at the Indian startup culture<\/a>, saying luxury brands<\/a> created by billionaires\u2019 children should not be mistaken for real startups. Speaking at Startup Mahakumbh 2025<\/a> in New Delhi, he said true innovation should focus on large-scale problem-solving rather than fancy consumer products.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have been going through a lot of our startup success stories. And wherever I go, all over the country\u2026I know at least three or four billionaires whose children make at least one brand of fancy cookies and ice creams. I have no complaints against that but is that the destiny of India?\u201d Goyal asked.<\/p>\n

He criticised repackaging premium consumer products as startups, adding that such businesses do not represent the kind of disruptive innovation<\/a> India needs.<\/p>\n

\u201c(They) use labels like \u2018healthy,\u2019 \u2018gluten-free,\u2019 and \u2018vegan,\u2019 add good packaging and call themselves startups. These are not startups. This is entrepreneurship<\/a>. This is business.\u201d<\/p>\n

Further, Goyal said that despite India having the third-largest startup ecosystem in the world, it needs to focus on deep-tech<\/a>, manufacturing, and large-scale innovation to compete with global leaders. <\/p>\n

He said creating high-end brands does not contribute disruptive innovation that makes a country a powerhouse in technology.The minister further asked if India was happy with gig work and food delivery while China raced ahead in deep-tech, electric mobility, and battery technology. \u201cDukaandari ka hi kaam karna hai<\/em> ya<\/em> one of scale, to make a mark in the world?\u201d he had asked, urging Indian entrepreneurs to think beyond short-term, profit-driven models.
