While this has grown over the years, investments in the technology ecosystem in the past few years have fallen significantly. <\/p>\n<p><span class=\"subHead\">Quote, unquote: <\/span>\u201cThere are global financial institutions who are taking different risks such as currency risks and credit risks to invest into Indian startups, but Indian financial institutions are unable to do so primarily due to regulations,\u201d said Siddarth Pai, founding partner, 3one4 Capital.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"subHead\">What\u2019s the context:<\/span> In an<a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/tech\/technology\/startups-looking-to-reverse-flip-must-pay-tax-piyush-goyal\/articleshow\/108881021.cms\"> interaction with ET reporters last month<\/a>, commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal said one of the biggest concerns of the government in the context of India\u2019s startup ecosystem was the need for higher domestic capital. \u201cI wish to see more private sector investments from domestic funds and domestic industry\u2026that\u2019s my biggest area of concern in the startup ecosystem,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<hr style=\"border-bottom: solid 1px #979797; margin: 20px 0 14px;\" data-attr-sectionload=\"jsSectionLad_2\"\/>\n<p>Apple in talks with Murugappa, Titan for assembly of camera modules<\/p>\n<div class=\"imageHolder\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"artimg\" align=\"center\" style=\"width:100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/img.etimg.com\/photo\/msid-109323442\/Apple India.jpg\" alt=\"Apple India\" title=\"Apple India\"\/><\/div>\n<p>Apple is in advanced <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/tech\/technology\/iphone-may-click-with-titan-murugappa\/articleshow\/109321224.cms\">discussions with Chennai-headquartered Murugappa Group and Tata Group\u2019s Titan Company <\/a>to assemble and possibly manufacture sub-components for the camera modules used in iPhones.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"subHead\">Driving the news:<\/span> If the talks are fruitful, it will mark a deepening of the Indian supplier ecosystem for the Cupertino- headquartered company as it shifts more of its operations away from China. Founder Byju Raveendran will be returning to the helm of affairs to oversee day-to-day operations. <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/tech\/startups\/exclusive-byjus-india-ceo-arjun-mohan-resigns-founder-raveendran-to-helm-daily-ops\/articleshow\/109299806.cms\">ETtech first broke the news on Monday morning<\/a>, citing sources.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"subHead\">Driving the news: <\/span>\u201cBy focusing on our core strengths with three specialised business units, we will unlock new growth opportunities while continuing to focus on profitability,\u201d Raveendran, group CEO at Byju\u2019s, said, adding that the restructuring will pave the way for \u2018Byju\u2019s 3.0\u2019.<\/p>\n<div class=\"imageHolder\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"artimg\" align=\"center\" style=\"width:100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/img.etimg.com\/photo\/msid-109323471\/Byju versus its shareholders_Timeline_15 Apr 2024_Graphic_ETTECH.jpg\" alt=\"Byju versus its shareholders_Timeline_15 Apr 2024_Graphic_ETTECH\" title=\"Byju versus its shareholders_Timeline_15 Apr 2024_Graphic_ETTECH\"\/><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"subHead\">What\u2019s the significance?<\/span> Raveendran\u2019s plan to return as operational CEO at the firm assumes significance as a group of the company\u2019s investors voted in February, at an extraordinary general meeting (EGM), <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/tech\/startups\/byjus-egm-investors-vote-to-remove-founder-from-board-edtech-says-resolutions-invalid\/articleshow\/107947262.cms\">to oust him as the chief executive.<\/a> The outcome of this EGM is being challenged in the Karnataka High Court and <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/tech\/startups\/nclt-refuses-to-stay-byjus-egm-over-200-million-rights-issue\/articleshow\/108843668.cms\">the matter is under an interim stay<\/a>. Therefore, the resolutions can\u2019t be enforced.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"subHead\">Byju\u2019s troubles: <\/span>The development, signalling a deepening of the crisis at the firm, comes at a time when Raveendran is grappling with multiple issues that have hit the company over the past year.<\/p>\n<p>Byju&#8217;s, in a separate statement, said it received the independent scrutiniser&#8217;s report on the EGM to increase the share capital. The report said shareholders have approved the resolution with a majority 55% of the total votes polled being in favour of increasing the share capital for the rights issue.<\/p>\n<p>A majority of its <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/tech\/technology\/byjus-delays-salary-again-due-to-cash-crunch\/articleshow\/108946316.cms\">employees are yet to be paid salaries for the past two months<\/a>, and several senior executives have left amid a severe cash crunch at the firm.<\/p>\n<hr style=\"border-bottom: solid 1px #979797; margin: 20px 0 14px;\" data-attr-sectionload=\"jsSectionLad_4\"\/>\n<p>Baron hikes Pine Labs valuation to $5.8 billion, Invesco marks it up to $4.8 billion<\/p>\n<div class=\"imageHolder\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"artimg\" align=\"center\" style=\"width:100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/img.etimg.com\/photo\/msid-109323496\/amrish-rau-pine-labs_1..jpg\" alt=\"amrish-rau-pine-labs_1.\" title=\"amrish-rau-pine-labs_1.\"\/><\/div>\n<p><em>Amrish Rau, CEO, Pine Labs<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Two <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/tech\/startups\/us-funds-baron-funds-invesco-mark-up-pine-labs-valuation\/articleshow\/109315635.cms\">US-based funds have marked up their investment<\/a> in merchant-focused digital payments company Pine Labs.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"subHead\">What\u2019s happening: <\/span>While Baron Funds hiked its valuation to $5.8 billion, Invesco has raised it to $4.8 billion as of December 2023, regulatory filings with the US Securities and Exchange Commission showed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/tech\/technology\/baron-capital-marks-up-swiggy-pine-labs-valuation-almost-halves-byjus-value\/articleshow\/103135585.cms\">Baron Funds had valued Pine Labs at $5.3 billion<\/a> in September last year. On January 4, ET reported that Invesco had <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/tech\/startups\/us-based-invesco-raises-swiggys-valuation-to-8-3-billion\/articleshow\/106535689.cms\">cut the valuation of Pine Labs to $3.9 billion<\/a> as of October 31.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, Invesco owns around 2.8% of Pine Labs and Baron Funds has around 1.3%. Peak XV Partners, the original investor in the company, now owns about 20.6%, data from Tracxn shows.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"subHead\">Background: <\/span>Crossover funds, which invest both in publicly traded and privately held companies, periodically review the valuation of their portfolio companies.
