The Enforcement Directorate<\/a> (ED) on Saturday seized Rs 1.5 crore in cash from a chit fund company<\/a> linked to Gokulam Gopalan<\/a>, producer of the Malayalam film L2: Empuraan<\/a>. <\/p>\n

The search operation was part of an investigation under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), targeting potential violations of foreign exchange laws<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The ED initiated the operation on Friday, which concluded on Saturday, raiding multiple locations. <\/p>\n

The premises searched included the residential and business addresses of Sree Gokulam Chits and Finance Co. Pvt. Ltd. in Kozhikode<\/a>, Kerala, and Chennai, Tamil Nadu. During the raid, the agency recovered Rs 1.5 crore in cash and seized several documents deemed incriminating in connection with FEMA violations<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The ED stated that the company, without proper authorisation, had been accepting chit fund subscriptions from individuals residing outside India, violating FEMA regulations. <\/p>\n

Specifically, the company was found to have collected Rs 3.71 crore in cash and Rs 220.74 crore via cheques from foreign residents, circumventing Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines on capital account transactions.The raid also revealed significant cash payments made to overseas residents in breach of Section 3(b) of FEMA, which regulates foreign exchange dealings. The ED’s investigation follows a tip-off about these illicit financial activities.There has been no immediate response from Gopalan or his company regarding ED’s claims.<\/p>\n

The searches come amid the ongoing controversy surrounding L2: Empuraan, the second part of the Lucifer trilogy, produced by Gokulam Gopalan alongside Antony Perumbavoor<\/a> and Subaskaran. Released on March 27, the film sparked intense discussions due to its critique of right-wing politics and indirect references to the 2002 Gujarat riots<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Following the controversy, the filmmakers made changes to the movie, with Antony Perumbavoor confirming the removal of a little over two minutes of scenes. The film is directed by actor Prithviraj Sukumaran<\/a>, who also stars alongside Malayalam superstar Mohanlal.<\/p>\n
