You must\u00a0be living\u00a0under a rock if you have not heard about the latest controversy surrounding\u00a0Laapataa Ladies<\/em><\/a>. A video making the rounds online highlighted striking similarities between Kiran\u00a0Rao’s\u00a0film and an Arabic short film titled\u00a0Burqa City<\/em>, which\u00a0was released\u00a0in 2019 \u2014 five years before\u00a0Laapataa Ladies<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Soon after the video went viral, social media users began raising plagiarism allegations against\u00a0Laapataa Ladies<\/em>,\u00a0which was\u00a0also\u00a0India’s\u00a0official entry to the Oscars this year.<\/p>\n

Now, Fabrice Bracq, the director of\u00a0Burqa City<\/em><\/a>, has raised concerns about the originality of\u00a0Laapataa Ladies<\/em>\u00a0in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cFirst of all, even before watching the film, I was surprised by how closely the pitch matched\u00a0that of my short film.\u00a0Then I watched the film, and I was both\u00a0surprised and shocked\u00a0to see that, although the story had\u00a0been adapted\u00a0to Indian culture, many aspects of my short film were\u00a0clearly\u00a0present,\u201d\u00a0Fabrice said as quoted by India Today.<\/a><\/p>\n

He continued,\u00a0\u201cNotably – and this is by no means an exhaustive list – the kind, loving, naive husband who loses his wife, contrasted with the other husband who is violent and despicable. The scene with the police officer is also striking: a corrupt, violent, and intimidating policeman surrounded by two sidekicks. Of course,\u00a0there’s\u00a0the moment with the photo of the veiled woman.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pointing out the similarities in the plot, Fabrice Bracq said,\u00a0\u201cThe scene where the kind husband searches for his wife in various shops is particularly revealing – he shows the shopkeepers a photo of his veiled wife, just like in the short film, and then the\u00a0shopkeeper’s\u00a0wife comes out wearing a burqa, almost like a nod to Burqa City.\u00a0There’s\u00a0also the similarity in the plot twist at the end, where we learn that the woman deliberately chose to run away from her abusive husband – a key narrative element in Burqa City.”<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The filmmaker\u00a0concluded by saying,\u00a0“And more broadly, the film carries a similar message about\u00a0women’s\u00a0emancipation and feminism.”<\/p>\n

On Saturday,\u00a0Laapataa Ladies<\/em>\u00a0writer Biplab Goswami responded to the controversy and claimed\u00a0that his\u00a0story is\u00a0\u201c100% original.\u201d\u00a0He stated that he had registered the synopsis of\u00a0Laapataa Ladies<\/em>\u00a0with the Screenwriters Association in\u00a02014,\u00a0before\u00a0the Arabic film was even made. Released in 2024,\u00a0Laapataa Ladies<\/em>\u00a0follows the story of two brides\u00a0who\u00a0are\u00a0accidentally swapped\u00a0during a train journey. The film features Pratibha Ranta, Nitanshi Goel and Sparsh Shrivastava in pivotal roles.<\/p>\n
