Pic: Copernicus\/ECMWF<br \/>\n        <\/span><br \/>\n      <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Last week the UK&#8217;s Met Office found England had its sunniest March on records going back to 1920.<\/p>\n<p>The total of 185.8 hours of sunshine smashed the previous record from 1929 by more than 14 hours. The outstanding hot and dry conditions <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/large-wildfire-in-scotland-after-multiple-blazes-across-uk-this-week-13342330\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fuelled multiple wildfires<\/a><\/strong> by drying out plants and trees.<\/p>\n<p>And this week <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/uk-weather-forecasts-say-temperatures-to-soar-above-20c-in-some-areas-13343772\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>temperatures of above 20C (68F) are set to return<\/strong><\/a>, following the hottest day of the year so far on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>But when it comes to rainfall, March was a month of two extremes in Europe, Copernicus found.<\/p>\n<p>It was drier than average in the UK and Ireland, and in a big area from central Europe to Greece and Turkey &#8211; shown in dark brown on a second map that illustrates wet versus dry conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Not so over Spain and Portugal, where a series of storms brought widespread floods, forcing some from their homes but refilling reservoirs parched in last year&#8217;s drought.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sdc-article-widget sdc-article-image\">\n<figure class=\"sdc-article-image__figure\">\n<div class=\"sdc-article-image__wrapper\" data-aspect-ratio=\"16\/9\">\n          <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"sdc-article-image__item\" loading=\"lazy\" intrinsicsize=\"768x432\" src=\"https:\/\/e3.365dm.com\/25\/04\/768x432\/skynews-spain-reservoir-sau_6879375.jpg?20250407220048\" srcset=\"https:\/\/e3.365dm.com\/25\/04\/384x216\/skynews-spain-reservoir-sau_6879375.jpg?20250407220048 380w, https:\/\/e3.365dm.com\/25\/04\/768x432\/skynews-spain-reservoir-sau_6879375.jpg?20250407220048 760w, https:\/\/e3.365dm.com\/25\/04\/1600x900\/skynews-spain-reservoir-sau_6879375.jpg?20250407220048 1024w, https:\/\/e3.365dm.com\/25\/04\/2048x1152\/skynews-spain-reservoir-sau_6879375.jpg?20250407220048 2048w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 1024px) 1024px, 100vw\" alt=\"View of the Sau reservoir, about 100 km (62 miles) north of Barcelona, in Vilanova de Sau, Spain, on Monday, March 24, 2025.
