The S&amp;P 500 plunged 10.5%, erasing over $5 trillion in shareholder value.<\/li>\n<li><strong>$9 trillion\u2014and counting:<\/strong> Since peaking on February 19, the S&amp;P 500 has lost more than $9 trillion in value as investor anxiety deepens over a prolonged US-China trade war. Analysts warn that if the tariff spiral continues, the hit to global equities could exceed the damage seen during Covid\u2019s first wave. For now, markets are still searching for a floor\u2014and a signal that either side is ready to blink.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u20b924 lakh crore vanishes from Indian markets:<\/strong> The global market rout didn\u2019t stop at US borders. Indian equities shed \u20b924 lakh crore in investor wealth in just five trading sessions this April. According to a report in the Economic Times, the Tata Group alone lost \u20b92.08 lakh crore in market cap this month, pushing its year-to-date erosion to \u20b95.58 lakh crore. Reliance Group wasn\u2019t spared either, giving up \u20b91.29 lakh crore since April 1. His authority is consolidated, and his state-controlled economy allows more centralized responses. His nationalist messaging \u2014 and refusal to be seen as capitulating \u2014 plays well at home, especially as the Chinese public remains wary of US intentions.<br \/><span class=\"strong\" data-ua-type=\"1\" onclick=\"stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)\">What\u2019s next<\/span><br \/>Expect more escalation before any de-escalation. China has threatened further retaliatory tariffs and could extend export bans across critical materials. Xi\u2019s team is weighing how far they can push without triggering global backlash \u2014 or deeper internal economic stress.<br \/>Trump, facing economic and political constraints, may eventually seek a face-saving off-ramp. A symbolic win \u2014 like a TikTok sale, increased fentanyl enforcement by China, or vague pledges of future purchases \u2014 could offer the \u201cmission accomplished\u201d moment he needs.<br \/>\u201cThey\u2019re offering things to us that we would have never even thought of asking them for,\u201d Trump claimed of other countries seeking deals \u2014 a possible signal that a negotiated climb-down is in the cards.<br \/><span class=\"strong\" data-ua-type=\"1\" onclick=\"stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)\">Bottom line<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"cdatainfo modify_cdata_list_style id-r-component \" data-pos=\"80\">\n<ul>\n<li>Trump craves headline-friendly wins. Xi doesn\u2019t need them. Trump faces elections, Wall Street, and restless consumers.
