It\u2019s one of the last structures in the world in Dutch Renaissance style, where trade has been conducted throughout the entire period.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The police in Copenhagen said on social media that they had evacuated several surrounding buildings, and urged people to avoid the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A local emergency response agency also urged people to keep their distance from the fire and to seek medical attention if they experience breathing difficulties from the smoke.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The old stock exchange building, a 17th-century structure that was once the financial center of Denmark, also housed several historical paintings and other artifacts. City officials rushed the valued pieces out of the building after the fire broke out. At the time of the fire, the building was occupied by Dansk Erhverv, a business organization.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">One of the larger works carried to safety was Peder Severin Kroyer\u2019s \u201cFrom Copenhagen Stock Exchange,\u201d <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/avisendanmark.dk\/indland\/historisk-p-s-kroeyer-maleri-reddes-ud-fra-braendende-boersen\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">according to a local news outlet<\/a>. The work, which was painted in 1895 and depicts several key Danish financial figures, is more than 13 feet long. It took six people to remove it to safety.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Engel-Schmidt said the old stock exchange\u2019s artworks \u201ctell us something about ourselves as a nation and as a people.\u201d He added that the building had been the backdrop of countless historical events, and that it was ingrained in the Danish psyche.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThat\u2019s why there are people standing in the streets, looking incredibly sad,\u201d he said. \u201cIt affects me, too.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Several other officials lamented the fire, including Jan Jorgensen, a member of Parliament for the opposition Liberal Party, who called for the old stock exchange to be rebuilt. \u201cProbably the most iconic building in Copenhagen,\u201d <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JanEJoergensen\/status\/1780140748274335895\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">he said on social media<\/a>. \u201cAll forces must be united to have this old, beautiful house rebuilt in all its power and splendor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The building was constructed at the direction of King Christian IV, who had recognized the importance of trade and commerce, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.visitcopenhagen.com\/copenhagen\/planning\/old-stock-exchange-borsen-gdk412232\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">according to the Visit Copenhagen tourism website<\/a>. The original structure contained at least 40 market stalls and was surrounded by water on three sides to help ships easily unload their cargo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As fire crews fought the flames on Tuesday, dozens of onlookers quietly stood on the street, watching in shock, including Celeste Bolvinkil Andersen, who said she had woken up when she heard her roommate shouting about the fire.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt feels a bit like becoming a firsthand witness to history,\u201d she said. \u201cI can\u2019t help but sit here deeply, deeply disappointed in myself, for not having gone inside and seen the Borsen from the inside.
