As the day went on, pundits increasingly weighed in, parsing the pros and cons of the unexpected development.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">With Iran\u2019s nuclear program considered to be <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/12\/world\/middleeast\/iran-israel-military-weapons.html\" title=\"\">at its most advanced stage<\/a> ever, some Israeli experts have suggested that now would be the perfect time to attack Iran\u2019s nuclear facilities. Iran\u2019s traditional allies on Israel\u2019s borders \u2014 Hezbollah, the Lebanese group, and Syria \u2014 are now weakened, and any attack could take advantage of Tehran\u2019s vulnerability after <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2024\/10\/26\/world\/israel-iran-lebanon-gaza\" title=\"\">Israeli strikes in the fall<\/a> took out air defenses around key nuclear sites.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">If direct talks take place, they would be the first official face-to-face negotiations between the two countries since Mr. Trump <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/05\/08\/world\/middleeast\/trump-iran-nuclear-deal.html\" title=\"\">abandoned the Obama-era nuclear accord<\/a> seven years ago at the urging of Mr. Netanyahu, who had denounced it as a \u201cbad deal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Netanyahu said in the Oval Office on Monday that he and Mr. Trump had discussed Iran and were \u201cunited in the goal\u201d of preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. If that could be done diplomatically, in an absolute way, he said, \u201cthat would be a good thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Many Israelis would agree.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe ideal for Israel would be a very good agreement,\u201d said Yoel Guzansky, a senior researcher and head of the Gulf program at the Institute for National Security Studies at Tel Aviv University. He said he hoped Mr. Trump\u2019s approach would be \u201cmore aggressive\u201d than that of previous administrations in dealings with Iran.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cBut there is nothing ideal in the world,\u201d Mr. Guzansky added, expressing broadly held concerns that Mr. Trump \u201cmay be willing to be more flexible than Israel would be\u201d and that a gap may open up over the issue between Israel and Washington.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The interests of the two sides already differ, Mr. Guzansky said, in that Israel sits near Iran and has to live with its proxies on its borders, while the United States is thousands of miles away and has other pressing problems.
