Pune: Private weather forecaster Skymet<\/a> expects the upcoming monsoon to be normal to the tune of 103% of the long period average rainfall, with an error margin of +\/- 5%.<\/p>\n

Skymet expects that the preliminary forecast of positive Indian Ocean Dipole<\/a> (IOD) will work in tandem with ‘Enso neutral<\/a>‘ – a period when there is neither El Nino<\/a> nor La Nina<\/a> – for better monsoon prospects.<\/p>\n

“Historically, Enso neutral, coupled with positive IOD, tended to produce a worthy monsoon,” the forecaster said in a release. “The second half of the season is expected to be better than the primal phase,” it added.<\/p>\n

The spread of normal rainfall during the monsoon period of June to September is 96-104% of the long period average (LPA) rainfall of 868.6 mm.<\/p>\n

“La Nina this season was weak and brief” and its signs “have started fading now,” Jatin Singh, managing director of Skymet, said. “The occurrence of El Nino, which normally corrupts the monsoon, is ruled out. Enso neutral is likely to be the most dominant category during the Indian summer monsoon,” he said.<\/p>\n

El Nino refers to warmer-than-normal sea surface temperature in the Pacific Ocean while La Nina is the cooling of the sea surface, which typically strengthens the monsoon. In terms of geographical prospects, Skymet expects sufficiently good rains over western and South India. The core monsoon rainfed zone of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh is expected to receive adequate rainfall, it said. “Excess rainfall is likely all along the Western Ghats, more so, over Kerala, coastal Karnataka and Goa,” Skymet said in its forecast.<\/p>\n

“Northeast region and hilly states of North India are likely to observe less-than-normal rainfall during the season,” it added.
