India and China should stand together to overcome difficulties in the face of tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration, the spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in India said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

“China-India economic and trade relationship is based on complimentarity and mutual benefit. Facing the U.S. abuse of tariffs… the two largest developing countries should stand together to overcome the difficulties,” spokesperson Yu Jing said in a post on X.<\/p>\n

“Trade and tariff wars have no winners. All countries should uphold the principles of extensive consultation, practice true multilateralism, jointly oppose all forms of unilateralism and protectionism.”<\/p>\n

China has pledged to retaliate against Trump\u2019s latest tariff threat and mobilized state organs to send a message of resilience, raising the risk of a prolonged trade war between the world\u2019s two largest economies.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe US threat to escalate tariffs on China is a mistake on top of a mistake,\u201d the Chinese Ministry of Commerce said in a Tuesday statement, hours after the US president vowed to impose additional import taxes. \u201cIf the US insists on its own way, China will fight to the end.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Chinese response came after Trump threatened a further 50% tariff on all Chinese goods unless Beijing withdraws its tit-for-tat retaliation against his earlier \u201creciprocal\u201d levies. That takes the cumulative tariff rate announced this year to 104% \u2014 effectively doubling the import price of any goods shipped from China to the US.Beijing moved to reassure investors after Chinese stocks listed in Hong Kong fell the most since the 2008 financial crisis the day before, with the central bank loosening its grip on the yuan to boost exports and promising more loans to stabilize the market. At the same time, the head of the country\u2019s economic-planning agency met with representatives of private Chinese companies including Apple Inc. supplier Goertek Inc. to address their concerns.While authorities have left the door open to dialogue, China\u2019s reaction suggests it intends to resist the US president\u2019s pressure campaign, dimming the prospect of a deal in the short term.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe rhetoric from China is strong,\u201d said Michelle Lam, greater China economist at Societe Generale SA. \u201cWithout Trump backing down investors may need to prepare for trade decoupling between both countries.\u201d
