Muttahida Majlis e Ulema, an amalgam of religious bodies across Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh prepared a common resolution rejecting Waqf Amendment Act<\/a> condemning the government\u2019s authoritarian, un-democratic, and un-Islamic actions as deeply hurtful to the sentiments of the Muslim community across the country. <\/p>\n

They demanded immediate withdrawal of the Act and reaffirmed its full support to the All India Muslim Personal Law Board<\/a> and will stand by the Board in whatever course of action it deems appropriate to address the issues arising from the new law.<\/p>\n

Imams and members of the MMU publicly read out the resolution prepared by the council in major mosques, khanqahs, shrines, and Imambaras throughout the Kashmir Valley<\/a>, Chenab region, Jammu, Leh, and Kargil. The MMU said that this resolution received overwhelming public support and endorsement.<\/p>\n

Prominent scholars, Imams and Khateebs also expressed serious anger and concern over the house detention of the MMU head, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq<\/a>, who was once again disallowed to address Friday congregation at the historic Jama Masjid in downtown Srinagar.<\/p>\n

The resolution stated that the Act is being widely viewed by the Muslim community as affecting the established and religious character of the Waqf institution in India. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe reduction in the powers of Muslim-led Waqf Boards, and the greater role now assigned to government authorities and non-Muslim officials, has led to apprehensions that the core religious and charitable purpose of Waqf may not be fully understood or upheld,\u201d read the resolution.The MMU resolution stated that repeal of Section 40 of the Waqf Act, 1995, which earlier empowered Waqf Boards to determine the status of properties, is seen as creating uncertainty around many longstanding Waqf properties.\u201cThe removal of the concept of \u201cWaqf by long-standing use\u201d, which protected mosques, graveyards, and other Islamic sites used for generations without formal documentation, may result in the loss of such properties simply due to lack of official records,\u201d read the resolution. They said that the changes in the functioning of Waqf Tribunals<\/a>, allowing for appeals in High Courts, may lead to prolonged legal proceedings and delays in the resolution of matters affecting religious endowments<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, People\u2019s Democratic Party also took out a protest against the Waqf Act in Srinagar which was thwarted by the police. \u201cWe wanted to express our dissent against the Waqf Act. No section of the society accepts this Act ,especially given how it was passed in Parliament. While the BJP\u2019s approach towards muslims is condemnable, the criminal silence of the NC is equally regretful,\u201d said a PDP leader.<\/p>\n

The People\u2019s Conference leader, Sajad Lone said that the truth stares in our faces that the ruling NC sabotaged the Waqf discussion. \u201cAnd used noise and bedlam in the assembly to camouflage the mother of all betrayals. The Waqf Betrayal,\u201d said Lone.
