Economic offences in the capital rose sharply last year, with a 34% jump in reported cases. Delhi Police say that poor verification, tempting returns, and misleading claims played a big role in how individuals and companies ended up getting duped, reported TOI.<\/p>\n

According to police data, 161 cases were registered in 2024 \u2014 up from 120 in 2023. However, arrests dipped slightly from 178 to 161. There was also a drop in final chargesheets \u2014 295 in 2023 versus 245 last year. Interestingly, supplementary chargesheets saw a rise, from 191 to 206.<\/p>\n

Builder fraud tops charts<\/h3>\n

A senior police officer said many victims fell for housing scams due to a lack of basic checks. \u201cIn several cases, builders didn\u2019t get necessary approvals but went ahead with flashy brochures and showy launches, collecting money from buyers. <\/p>\n

According to the report, later, either construction stalled or the same flat was sold to multiple people,\u201d the officer said.<\/p>\n

Builder fraud made up the majority of last year\u2019s economic offences \u2014 with 80 cases. It was followed by land and property fraud (35), and NBFC or bank-related frauds (28). In these too, fake documents and misrepresentation were key tricks used to secure loans or investments.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn some cases, companies showed inflated profits to secure loans. They returned some money for a while to build trust, then suddenly disappeared. That’s when verification revealed the same property had been used as collateral for multiple loans,\u201d the officer added. <\/p>\n

Ponzi problems & MLM traps<\/h3>\n

Another officer pointed out that Ponzi and multi-level marketing (MLM) schemes were still very much active. These promise quick money, pay a few early returns to win confidence, then vanish \u2014 leaving a trail of lost savings. \u201cSuch schemes rely heavily on word-of-mouth and often catch unsuspecting investors off guard,\u201d he told TOI.<\/p>\n

Police push for awareness<\/h3>\n

Special commissioner Sharad Aggarwal said the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) spent the year clearing pending cases and upskilling its team. Officers were given regular training on new laws and techniques to better handle white-collar crime.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe also focused on public awareness \u2014 helping people understand how to avoid these frauds. Prevention is key,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Joint commissioner K R Chaurasia agreed, noting that many victims didn\u2019t verify what they were investing in. \u201cHigh returns are tempting, but people skip doing basic checks. This is where we say: be vigilant, verify, and validate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Investigating such crimes is complex, police say, involving old records, fake paperwork, and multi-agency coordination. \u201cWe often need forensic support to verify forged documents and confirm the full scale of the fraud,\u201d an officer added.
