Lots of people, it turns out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In fact, \u201cThe Great Moose Migration,\u201d an annual Swedish <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.svtplay.se\/video\/8rQo4Rz\/den-stora-algvandringen\/idag-00-00?video=visa\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">livestream<\/a> that began on Tuesday, may soon dethrone the opening credits of \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=79TVMn_d_Pk\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Monty Python and the Holy Grail<\/a>\u201d as humanity\u2019s greatest artistic tribute to the Swedish moose.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Perhaps the power transfer is already over.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI didn\u2019t really think it would hit,\u201d said Arne Nilsson, 54, speaking of when it started in 2019. \u201cI thought it would be ridiculous,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Nilsson, who grew up in the Swedish woods, was wrong. Now, he will devote six hours a day to moderating a Facebook <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/330650520975928\/?notif_id=1744705565077434\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">group<\/a> of over 77,000 fans, many of whom will spend the next three weeks watching moose on SVT, Sweden\u2019s national broadcaster. (The group\u2019s name is self-explanatory: \u201cVi som gillar den stora algvandringen pa SVT!\u201d or \u201cWe who like the great moose migration on SVT!\u201d)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Unlike many other nature programs, which may have music and narration, the moose march broadcast is raw. It is also live. The only \u201cedits\u201d are cuts between the 34 cameras along the migration path.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">That\u2019s the draw, Mr. Nilsson said: The moose do not know they are being watched. They certainly do not know they are being watched by zealots live-blogging their minute-by-minute joy of watching the migration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThis isn\u2019t staged,\u201d he said. \u201cThis isn\u2019t cut together. This is reality TV at its finest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">About 300,000 moose (yes, that\u2019s the plural of moose) live in Sweden, said Goran Ericsson, who leads the moose research group at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. The 100 or so that may appear on the livestream are traveling on a path their ancestors have followed since the ice age.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Last year, millions of people watched the livestream, said Johan Erhag, the executive producer. And the fans are downright obsessed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cSome people are fanatics,\u201d said Lasse Nasstrom, 59, a member of the Facebook group, who streams it on one of his three monitors while he works on the others. \u201cI don\u2019t believe some of them sleep during those weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Some people, like Lillemor Elfgren, start their days by checking for updates. Ms. Elfgren, 43, lives in Vannasby, in northeast Sweden, and gets a notification whenever there\u2019s any real action.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cHas anything interesting happened?\u201d she said. \u201cIs someone about to swim?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">This is hardly the only animal livestream to delight humans. There\u2019s \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/04\/19\/fashion\/19planet.html\" title=\"\">Planet Earth<\/a>,\u201d of course, and the Dutch \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/03\/28\/style\/fish-doorbell-visdeurbel-netherlands.html\" title=\"\">fish doorbell<\/a>,\u201d where fans help the fish migration. Some friends count down the final seconds at the end of the year to the clock on a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ydYDqZQpim8\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">watering hole in the Namibian desert<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">(There\u2019s even a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fordfarm.com\/cave-aged-cheddar\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">cheese cam<\/a>, for people who want to watch wheels of Cheddar age in real time.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In Sweden, even when no moose are visible (which happens more often than one might expect from a moose livestream), the woods stun and awe. Rivers flow against snowy banks. Light scythes through sun-dappled groves. Swans glide, white and wild. These are like <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/offscreen.com\/view\/nature_as_comfort_zone\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Tarkovsky vistas<\/a>, set to the sound of birds and wind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI want it to be like a living painting on the wall,\u201d Stefan Edlund, the program\u2019s producer, said while sitting next to Dr. Ericsson as a wall of moose feeds blinked on screens behind them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Edlund was inspired by similar \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scandinaviastandard.com\/slow-down-with-norways-slow-tv\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">slow television<\/a>\u201d streams from Norway, a center of the tranquil Nordic style. He said he ignored advice to include flashy graphics or use a human presenter. The purity of the woods was the point.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Their cameras will film the moose, undisturbed, until May 4, when the feed is scheduled to end. That is, of course, if they can locate moose to film.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s a bit of a sport to find them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">So he and his team make it into a game, at least at the command center. They scour the feeds, turning the screens into a \u201cWhere\u2019s Waldo\u201d of the Cervidae family. Could that be one? Or that?<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">They\u2019re keeping a tally on a yellow paper, with a moose-to-stone spotting ratio. As of noon on Tuesday, stones were in the lead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThey are also called \u2018near-moose experiences,\u2019\u201d quipped Dr. Ericsson, the moose expert.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s a bit of fun,\u201d Mr. Edlund added, shrugging as he looked at the screens. \u201cKeeps you awake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">For fans, the feed is both an oasis and a mirage. They sit gazing at Sweden\u2019s forests and rivers, posting their delight online in unison.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Marianne Hauger, 49, turns it on while at home on Trundon, a small island in northeast Sweden.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She loves moose, of course.
