Former journalist Rajeev Masand, the COO of the Dharma Cornerstone Agency, opened up about escalating entourage costs<\/a><\/strong> in the film industry, and said that it is nobody\u2019s interest to weigh a project down with extra costs. He also stated that it is unfair for a makeup department to sometimes earn more on a project than the editor or the cinematographer, but in the same breath, said that makeup artists are also valued members of the team. Masand was joined by his DCA colleague Uday Singh Gauri in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India.<\/p>\n

Asked about rising entourage costs, Gauri said that blaming agencies is unfair. Masand revealed that the Producers Guild of India had a meeting with talent reps recently, where it was suggested that producers should implement caps on certain costs, but because there is no unity on that front, they were unable to arrive at a consensus. \u201cIf you really want the best for a job, the best will come at a cost. Everything is a function of good negotiation, and there should be no blackmailing,\u201d Gauri said.<\/p>\n

Masand chimed in, \u201cIt reveals a chink in the system. I was at a meeting with the Producers Guild of India, who raised this issue and said that it\u2019s getting out of hand, and they called for a meeting of agency heads. It\u2019s funny that all of us said the same thing, that it\u2019s in your hands. Unite and say we will not pay, cap costs. They weren\u2019t able to do it because there\u2019s no unity among the producers. Till you don\u2019t achieve that, you\u2019re not going to be able to take a stand.\u201d<\/p>\n

Masand said that every department has its value, but there shouldn\u2019t be a scenario where editors and cinematographers and writers are making less than the makeup artist. \u201cI do think that costs have spiralled irrationally. If hair and makeup is getting paid more than the editor of a film or the writer of a film, there\u2019s a problem. Actors need to take a stand, but really, the ball is finally in the court of the producers. They need to unite and say we\u2019re not going to encourage this.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Indian Express<\/a> has reported extensively on rising entourage costs<\/a><\/strong> in the past year. It was found that in some cases, the spot boys of a star on an average would charge Rs 25,000 per day, personal security would pocket Rs 15,000 per head per day and a stylist would charge upto Rs 1 lakh.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n
