Beyond her iconic performances during what is often referred to as Bollywood\u2019s \u2018golden era,\u2019 her personal life remains a subject of intrigue. It was also the sorrow in her personal life that earned her the moniker of the \u2018tragedy queen.\u2019 In a recent interaction, Madhubala\u2019s sister Madhur Bhushan talked about her life and her love affairs with Dilip Kumar and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/entertainment\/bollywood\/kishore-kumar-blasted-the-recordist-who-rejected-him-at-the-beginning-of-his-career-recalls-asha-bhosle-9828672\/\" class=\"\">Kishore Kumar<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Young in the film industry, Madhubala fell in love with <a rel=\"noamphtml\" class=\"keywordtourl\" href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/about\/dilip-kumar\/\">Dilip Kumar<\/a>. However, their romance didn\u2019t last long as the couple parted ways after an ego spat. After ending her relationship with Dilip, Madhubala got involved with <a rel=\"noamphtml\" class=\"keywordtourl\" href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/about\/kishore-kumar\/\">Kishore Kumar<\/a>, with whom she had worked in films like Dhake Ki Malmal (1956), Chalti Ka Naam Gadi (1958), and Half Ticket (1962). However, their marriage too wasn\u2019t a happy one.<\/p>\n<p><ev-engagement group-name=\"contentLogin\"\/><ev-engagement group-name=\"myNotification\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"ev-meter-content ie-premium-content-block\">\n<p>Madhubala and Kishore Kumar married despite the Mughal-E-Azam star being diagnosed with a heart condition \u2014 a hole in her heart (ventricular septal defect). Their marriage suffered after Madhubala\u2019s condition worsened and she became bedridden. Talking about the same, Madhur told Filmfare, \u201cAs she (Madhubala) wasn\u2019t keeping well, Abba said don\u2019t get married now, see what the doctor has to say. But they got married in 1960.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"osv-ad-class\" style=\"background-color: #f2f2f2;height: 375px;margin-bottom: 15px;\">\n<p>Story continues below this ad<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After Madhubala\u2019s condition worsened, Kishore Kumar flew her to London to consult a doctor, where they declared that she wouldn\u2019t survive. \u201cKishore Bhaiyya flew her to London about 10 days later. The doctors said, her heart is finished. And that she wouldn\u2019t live beyond two years,\u201d recalled Madhur.<\/p>\n<p>Kishore Kumar, who was at the peak of his career at that time, left a suffering Madhubala at her home with her father and sisters. The actor argued that since his career demanded him to travel, he couldn\u2019t take care of the ailing actor. \u201cKishore Bhaiyya left her at our home. He said that she was sick and needed care while he had to travel, work, sing and hence wouldn\u2019t be able to give her time. He said, I tried my best, I took her to London. But the doctors have said she won\u2019t survive. What\u2019s my fault?\u201d Madhur added.<\/p>\n<p>Though Madhur didn\u2019t blame Kishore for leaving Madhubala alone during a tough time, she agreed that the actor-filmmaker didn\u2019t provide her with emotional strength. \u201cWe\u2019re not saying that he was wrong. Aapa was told by the doctors you cannot have sex, you cannot have children\u2026 But yet a woman needs emotional support no matter what.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Madhur explained that Madhubala insisted on living with Kishore, and he even bought her a flat at <a rel=\"noamphtml\" class=\"keywordtourl\" href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/section\/cities\/mumbai\/\">Mumbai<\/a>\u2019s Carter Road, but she was mostly left alone in the house. She said, \u201cShe\u2019d be alone most of the time. The sea breeze made her sicker.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"adboxtop adsizes\">\n<p>Story continues below this ad<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Kishore reduced his visits to Madhubala and would also not be available to take her calls, and that made her jealous. \u201cOften Kishore Bhaiyya\u2019s phone was disconnected. He\u2019d visit her once in two to three months. He\u2019d say, \u2018If I come, you\u2019ll cry and it will not be good for your heart. You\u2019ll go into depression. You should rest.\u2019 She was young, jealousy was natural. Perhaps, a feeling of being abandoned killed her,\u201d said Madhur.<\/p>\n<p>Madhur admitted that despite seeing heartbreak and facing a fatal illness, her sister had a \u2018tremendous willpower\u2019 that helped her survive for nine years when she was only given two years to live.
