Amid political tensions and recent violence in West Bengal\u2019s Murshidabad district, the Calcutta High Court on Thursday permitted the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha<\/a> (BJYM) to hold its ‘Save Bengali Hindus<\/a>‘ rally on Saturday, April 19. <\/p>\n

The rally will start from Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s ancestral home and conclude at Dr Syama Prasad Mookherjee\u2019s residence in Kolkata<\/a>\u2019s Bhawanipur, the West Bengal BJP<\/a> said.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose announced that he would visit Murshidabad on Friday to personally assess the situation following the violence that broke out during protests on April 11 against the Waqf (Amendment) Act.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am going to the field to see for myself the realities of the field. I will have an objective view of the matter. The situation has been brought under control. We should take further steps to prevent similar instances in future,\u201d Bose said at a press conference. <\/p>\n

He added that people from the area have requested the presence of a Border Security Force (BSF) camp and assured that Raj Bhavan would do everything possible to support the victims, in collaboration with both the Union and State governments.<\/p>\n

Mamata Banerjee announces compensation, blames divisive politics<\/h2>\n

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also stated that she would visit Murshidabad and confirmed that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to probe the unrest. \u201cThe state government will build houses for the victims. The administration is trying to restore the confidence of the people,\u201d she said while addressing an event at Kolkata\u2019s Netaji Indoor Stadium. Banerjee announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the families of those killed in the violence and promised housing under the state\u2019s Banglar Bari<\/em> scheme for those who lost their homes. She also directed the Chief Secretary to file a report on the incident and take stock of damage to shops.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t see the religious identity of the victims but their pain,\u201d Banerjee said.<\/p>\n

BJP leaders have alleged a cover-up by the state administration. Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar, in a post on X, accused the West Bengal government of state-sponsored suppression.<\/p>\n

\u201cHindu families brutally persecuted by radical Islamist mobs in Murshidabad fled to Malda for survival,\u201d Majumdar wrote, claiming that local authorities were forcing victims out of relief camps to prevent them from meeting National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) officials.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis isn\u2019t just a moral failure \u2014 it\u2019s a total breakdown of constitutional order,\u201d Majumdar wrote, slamming the alleged intimidation and lack of access for human rights bodies.<\/p>\n

Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari has also filed a petition in the Calcutta High Court, demanding that the investigation be handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), citing the scale and sensitivity of the violence.<\/p>\n

Violence erupted in Murshidabad district on April 11 during protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act, a law that has been the subject of political and communal debate. <\/p>\n

So far, over 150 people have been arrested in connection with the unrest. <\/p>\n

Authorities have deployed additional police forces in violence-hit areas such as Samserganj and Dhuliyan to maintain order.
