Actor Malavika Mohanan<\/a><\/strong>, who has worked across industries in India<\/a><\/strong>, spoke about the frequent comments about her body that she has to face. She also admitted that \u2018navel obsession\u2019 is a real thing in the South, as is a preference for women who aren\u2019t skinny. She said that she has been told by co-stars and team members that she is either too skinny or too chubby, and that she doesn\u2019t appreciate such comments. Malavika is the daughter of cinematographer KU Mohanan, and has worked in the Malayalam, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu film industries.<\/p>\n

In an interview with Hauterrfly, she said, \u201cEvery industry has a different idea of the ideal female body type. If I put on a little bit of weight and I come to Mumbai<\/a> for work, my manager will be like, \u2018You put on a little bit? You\u2019ve stopped working out?\u2019 And at the same time, if I\u2019m fit and have washboard abs and I\u2019m in Chennai<\/a>, they\u2019ll say, \u2018Oh, you\u2019ve lost your chub, you were cuter when you had your chub\u2019. Women\u2019s bodies are commented on so frequently, at one point I would get confused, should I be fit, should I be curvy? Now, I\u2019ve reached a stage where I\u2019m like, \u2018Be healthy, be fit\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked if South Indian audiences are actually obsessed with female navels, Malavika said with a laugh, \u201cI used to be very perplexed earlier, too, because I\u2019ve grown up in Mumbai. It was a completely new phenomenon that navels are obsessed over so much. And then you\u2019d see pictures of actresses on social media, where they zoom into their bodies. Navel obsession is a very real thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Malavika said that when she did her first film as a \u2018gawky\u2019 21-year-old, she was told that she is too skinny, because South Indian audiences like their women to be curvier. \u201cI was trolled so much for being skinny. My body changed in my mid-20s. That\u2019s when I got a little curvier. I was trolled so badly, and it was harsh! It really affected me.\u201d Malavika made her acting debut in the film Pattam Pole. She has also starred in films such as Master, Petta, Thangalaan, and Yudhra.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n
