After the release of the movie\u2019s trailer, the Brahmin community raised objections against Phule, after which the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/opinion\/columns\/censoring-historical-facts-phule-defeat-purpose-9936247\/\" class=\"\">Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) demanded cuts in the film<\/a><\/strong>. Now, Phule director Ananth Mahadevan has opened up on the controversy and blamed society for being \u2018immature\u2019. He also admitted that as a society, we have \u2018regressed\u2019 in many ways.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with Times of India, Ananth was asked if we can find a solution to people jumping the gun before even watching the whole film. In his reply, he described society as \u201cimmature\u201d and admitted that he doesn\u2019t hope to see any change in such behaviour in the future. He said,\u00a0 \u201cThis comes forth either through some unnecessary prejudices or provocations or whatever, but we do not seem to have progressed.\u201d Ananth further shared that he thinks as a society we have \u2018regressed\u2019 in many ways. He pointed out how people have become \u2018self-centred and materialistic\u2019 and despite technological advancements, the social regressions has persisted in our society.<\/p>\n<p><ev-engagement group-name=\"contentLogin\"\/><ev-engagement group-name=\"myNotification\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"ev-meter-content ie-premium-content-block\">\n<p>Talking about the cuts that CBFC demanded in Phule, Ananth Mahadevan admitted that he felt \u2018amused\u2019 by the demands. \u201cIt was not something so major to be labelled fair or unfair,\u201d he said. Ananth also insisted that as a filmmaker he doesn\u2019t like his work being touched let alone altered. He said, \u201cI don\u2019t understand why we are so nervous about how people will react, or how sensitive they are. I think we should respect the sensibilities and the sensitivities of the audience.\u201d The filmmaker went on to clarify that his film \u2018does not exaggerate or fictionalise history.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Phule is based on the life of social reformers Jyotirao Phule and Savitribai Phule and how they fought against caste discrimination. It stars Patralekhaa and Pratik Gandhi in lead roles.
