Larsen & Toubro (L&T), one of India’s most influential infrastructure and engineering players, appears to be making a serious case that they can — and must.

In FY24, over 50 per cent of L&T’s revenue came from what it classifies as green businesses: Clean energy projects, water and wastewater solutions, mass transit systems, green buildings and sustainable infrastructure. These aren’t side bets; they’re now front and centre in L&T’s playbook.

The company’s ongoing transformation is anchored in its ‘Lakshya’ strategic plan, which sets bold environmental goals — carbon neutrality by 2040, water neutrality by 2035 and a 25 per cent reduction in emissions intensity by FY26.

While these timelines are ambitious, what makes them credible is the work that’s already underway. For instance, L&T is gradually shifting key operations to renewable energy and is on track to achieve around 12 per cent renewable energy usage across select sites. Biodiesel blending is cutting emissions on ground, while its Hazira campus was recently recognised as a single-use plastic-free facility by CII.

A holistic approach

L&T’s environmental approach is holistic, extending far beyond energy and emissions. Its water stewardship programme has seen CSR-led interventions across three geographies, enabling the harvesting of nearly 3.5 million kilolitres of water annually — close to 20 per cent of the company’s total water withdrawal for FY24.

Then there’s the matter of biodiversity — an area rarely associated with heavy engineering. During the construction of the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail, L&T successfully relocated 18 crocodiles through a conservation initiative. Along the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, where construction cuts through flamingo territory, the company adopted reverse drilling and eco-sensitive piling techniques to minimise disruption. And at Hazira, L&T has nurtured over 150 hectares of mangroves, a natural coastal shield that also sequesters carbon.

The company’s campuses too are getting greener. Sixteen L&T buildings and facilities now carry LEED or IGBC certifications, while four million trees were planted in FY24 alone. These are not just symbolic gestures; they also contribute to microclimate restoration, air quality improvement and employee well-being.

Mindset change

But perhaps the most telling shift is cultural. With a workforce of 1.95 lakh employees, this mindset is beginning to permeate across job sites, design labs and boardrooms.

“The world is undergoing massive changes — from ecosystem shifts to energy transitions — and it is imperative that we as responsible individuals adapt and lead the way. As an organisation, our legacy extends beyond business metrics. It’s about leaving a lasting impact. As we construct bridges, power plants and smart cities, let us also build a legacy of environmental stewardship,” said SN Subrahmanyan, chairman and managing director, L&T.

To make its ESG journey more accessible, L&T has also launched a new sustainability website — an interactive platform that features project stories, climate goals, metrics and grassroots-level impact. It serves not just as a record, but also as a declaration of intent.

This kind of transparency is becoming critical as all stakeholders seek purpose in addition to performance. For a company that has helped build modern India’s urban and industrial spine, this pivot signals more than internal reform. It offers a template for legacy players in emerging markets who must walk the tightrope between growth and environmental accountability.

Because at the end of the day, the infrastructure of the future cannot just be smarter or faster; it has to be sustainable too.

Website Link to be Published : https://new.lntsustainability.com/

Disclaimer: Content Produced by L&T

Source link

Through eco-friendly, sustainable initiatives, L&T is betting big on climate-centric growth for a changing world etpanache@timesofindia.com Given rising climate concerns and a surge in green capital, can large engineering companies shift course and embrace sustainable growth?
