A Belgian court<\/a> rejected the bail plea<\/a> of fugitive Mehul Choksi<\/a> on Tuesday, a key accused in the Rs 13,500 crore Punjab National Bank<\/a> (PNB) loan fraud<\/a> case, reported ANI.<\/p>\n

According to the news agency, a three-judge bench heard the arguments before ruling against granting bail. <\/p>\n

Choksi, who is wanted in connection with the $2-billion PNB fraud, was arrested by Belgian police recently under the request of India’s Central Bureau of Investigation<\/a> (CBI). <\/p>\n

Choksi’s legal team had indicated plans to challenge his arrest<\/a> before the Belgian court on various grounds, including the violation of the principle of natural justice, according to an earlier ET report. The team also likely to highlighted his poor health and “community ties” as reasons why he should not be considered a flight risk if granted bail.<\/p>\n

Sources familiar with the case told ET ton April 18 hat a bail plea, referred to as a ‘freedom request’ under Belgian legal terms, would be filed.<\/p>\n

According to Belgian law, courts may consider releasing an accused person with conditions such as wearing a global positioning system (GPS) tracker anklet to monitor their movements.Meanwhile, as reported by ET on April 15, the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) has reached out to 10 countries in a bid to confiscate the foreign assets of Choksi.ED, which probes money-laundering cases, is seeking to liquidate Choksi’s assets and return the money to victims of the bank fraud, even as CBI is pushing for his extradition. ED has sent 15 letters rogatory over the past few months to Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, the US, Belgium, China, Italy, Japan, the UK and the United Arab Emirates, formally requesting details of companies, assets, bank accounts and other information related to Choksi and his Gitanjali Group of companies.
