Amid escalating diplomatic tensions between India and Pakistan, Pakistani Olympic javelin champion Arshad Nadeem<\/a> has declined an invitation from Indian star Neeraj Chopra<\/a> to compete in the inaugural Neeraj Chopra Classic<\/a> in Bengaluru, scheduled for May 24.<\/p>\n

According to news agency PTI, Nadeem cited a clash with his training commitments for the upcoming Asian Athletics Championships<\/a> in South Korea as the reason for his non-participation. While confirming the development on Wednesday, Nadeem expressed his gratitude to Chopra for the gesture.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe (NC) Classic event is from 20th May (May 24) whereas I am scheduled to leave for Korea on 22nd May for the Asian Athletics Championship,\u201d Nadeem said, as quoted by PTI.<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cI have been training hard for the Asian Championship which will be held in Gumi, Korea from May 27 to 31.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chopra, India\u2019s Olympic gold medallist, had earlier this week confirmed he had extended an invitation to his Pakistani rival.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have sent invitation to Arshad and he said he will get back to me after discussing with his coach. As of now he is yet to confirm participation,\u201d Chopra said during a virtual media interaction on Monday.The two athletes have built mutual respect through their on-field rivalry. Nadeem clinched gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics with a record throw of 92.97m, while Chopra secured silver with a best of 89.45m.<\/p>\n

Top global names set to compete at NC Classic<\/h2>\n

The Neeraj Chopra Classic is set to feature a star-studded lineup. World-class javelin throwers<\/a> such as two-time world champion Anderson Peters (Grenada), 2016 Olympic gold medallist Thomas Rohler (Germany), 2016 Olympic silver medallist Julius Yego (Kenya), and current season leader Curtis Thompson (USA) are confirmed to participate.<\/p>\n

The event, jointly organised by Chopra and JSW Sports in collaboration with the Athletics Federation of India<\/a> (AFI) and World Athletics, has received a coveted ‘Category A’ status from World Athletics \u2014 further elevating its stature on the global athletics calendar.<\/p>\n

India-Pakistan ties at historic low<\/h2>\n

Nadeem\u2019s withdrawal also comes at a time of heightened tensions between India and Pakistan following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam. India on Wednesday suspended the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty<\/a> and announced sweeping downgrades in diplomatic relations with Islamabad.<\/p>\n

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said the decisions were a response to Pakistan\u2019s continued support for cross-border terrorism.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Indus Waters Treaty of 1960 will be held in abeyance with immediate effect, until Pakistan credibly and irrevocably abjures its support for cross-border terrorism,\u201d Misri told reporters.<\/p>\n

India also ordered the expulsion of Pakistan\u2019s defence, naval, and air advisors from its High Commission in New Delhi. A reciprocal withdrawal of Indian military officials from Islamabad has also been initiated. The number of diplomatic staff in both missions will be reduced to 30 by May 1, down from 55.<\/p>\n

The Integrated Check Post at Attari has also been closed, with return allowances given to those who previously crossed over with valid documentation.
