Ivan Popov, was dismissed from the Russian Army in July 2023, the most widely known <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/07\/13\/world\/europe\/russia-generals-ukraine-turmoil.html?searchResultPosition=4\" title=\"\">casualty of a purge<\/a> after the failed mutiny of the paramilitary leader Yevgeny V. Prigozhin. Earlier that year, General Popov had helped repulse a major Ukrainian offensive in the Zaporizhzhia region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">After his dismissal, General Popov addressed his troops in a four-minute recording in which he said he had been removed from his post for speaking truth to his superiors about battlefield problems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe were hit in the rear by our senior commander, who treacherously and vilely decapitated our army at the most difficult and tense moment,\u201d General Popov said in the audio \u2014 an apparent reference to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/01\/12\/world\/europe\/who-is-gerasimov-russia.html\" title=\"\">Gen. Valery V. Gerasimov<\/a>, the chief of Russia\u2019s armed forces.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The audio was made public by Andrei Gurulyov, a former general and a senior lawmaker in Russia\u2019s governing party, underlining General Popov\u2019s high reputation among the country\u2019s traditional military elite and pro-war ultranationalist commentators. General Popov\u2019s allies have presented him as an unassuming and effective battlefield commander who was more concerned with the welfare of his troops than the backdoor politics of military headquarters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">After the audio was made public, General Popov was arrested and charged with siphoning off metal mat\u00e9riel intended for the army.
