The safety rating initiative will extend to trucks and other heavy commercial vehicles as well.Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, announced the measures on Thursday during the inauguration of a Vehicle and Fleet Safety workshop jointly organized by the Global New Car Assessment Program (GNCAP) and the Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE).

“The government is working on standards and a safety assessment system for battery-operated e-rickshaws, which currently face significant safety issues. Enhancing their safety will not only improve quality but also create employment,” Gadkari said.

Officials have raised concerns over the practice of tampering with speed-limiting devices in e-rickshaws, allowing them to exceed the legal speed limit of 25 kmph. Such modifications have led to accidents, including rollovers. Government data indicates that around 16.2 lakh e-rickshaws have been registered across India over the past five years.

“Since e-rickshaws are the most affordable mode of last-mile connectivity, there’s a need for enhancements such as better signal lights, windshield wipers, and speedometers,” an official added.

Live Events

In addition to vehicle safety, the ministry is drafting a law to regulate the working hours of truck drivers, who currently clock up to 13–14 hours per day.“The Ministry is working on legislation to cap working hours for truck drivers. To address the driver shortage, we are also setting up 32 state-of-the-art driving training institutes across the country,” Gadkari said. He noted that air-conditioned driver cabins have already been mandated, and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are now compulsory in new commercial vehicles. The Ministry also plans to introduce a safety assessment and star rating system for trucks and commercial vehicles, modeled on the Bharat New Car Assessment Program (Bharat NCAP), which currently evaluates vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes.

“The aim is to push manufacturers to enhance vehicle quality and safety,” Gadkari said.

Launched in 2023, Bharat NCAP is India’s indigenous vehicle crash testing and star rating program designed to raise safety standards in the passenger vehicle segment.

Gadkari highlighted that India records the highest number of fatal road accidents globally, with 4.8 lakh crashes and 1.8 lakh deaths annually.

“Road safety, development of safe highways, vehicle safety, and the promotion of electric vehicles are top government priorities. We’re also focused on bringing down logistics costs from the current 14–16% to 9% in the coming years, given the automobile industry’s crucial role in the nation’s economic growth,” he added.

Source link

The government is planning to introduce a “Star Rating” system aimed at enhancing the safety of e-rickshaws by ensuring they operate below 25 kmph while also improving their structural standards.
