{"id":292492,"date":"2025-04-28T16:42:07","date_gmt":"2025-04-28T16:42:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.talkwithrattan.com\/index.php\/2025\/04\/28\/even-on-canadas-election-day-trump-again-insists-country-should-join-u-s\/"},"modified":"2025-04-28T16:42:07","modified_gmt":"2025-04-28T16:42:07","slug":"even-on-canadas-election-day-trump-again-insists-country-should-join-u-s","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.talkwithrattan.com\/index.php\/2025\/04\/28\/even-on-canadas-election-day-trump-again-insists-country-should-join-u-s\/","title":{"rendered":"Even on Canada\u2019s Election Day, Trump Again Insists Country Should Join U.S."},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align:center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i3.wp.com\/static01.nyt.com\/images\/2025\/04\/28\/multimedia\/28canada-election-trump-lzbq\/28canada-election-trump-lzbq-facebookJumbo.jpg?ssl=1\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"Even on Canada\u2019s Election Day, Trump Again Insists Country Should Join U.S.\" title=\"Even on Canada\u2019s Election Day, Trump Again Insists Country Should Join U.S.\" \/><\/div><p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-0\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">President Trump has put his thumb on Canada\u2019s pivotal national election taking place Monday in an extraordinary way, repeating his desire to make the country the 51st U.S. state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On Monday morning, just as polls were opening in Canada, he insisted, in a post on Truth Social, that Canadians should \u201cvote for the man\u201d who would make their country part of the United States. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He also called Canada \u201ca beautiful landmass\u201d and referred to the border between the two countries as an \u201cartificially drawn line from many years ago.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Since taking office, Mr. Trump has repeatedly said Canada \u201cdoesn\u2019t make sense\u201d as a country but should just join the United States, threatening Canada\u2019s sovereignty. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">His tariffs against America\u2019s closest ally and trading partner have pushed Canada closer to a recession, and his constant refrain about making Canada part of the United States have upended the political balance of power, boosting the previously moribund Liberal Party and hobbling the once dominant Conservatives. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He had made similar remarks questioning the permanence of the border between the two countries to former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, putting Canada\u2019s leadership on alert that the president of the United States was serious about taking over Canada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Observers struggled to interpret Mr. Trump\u2019s Monday missive. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Some felt it was veiled support for Pierre Poilievre, the Conservative Party leader, who is seen as a close ideological ally of Mr. Trump and has been criticized for being too Trump-like by many voters. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Others thought Mr. Trump\u2019s post favored \u2014 perhaps inadvertently \u2014 Mark Carney, the current prime minister and Liberal leader, who\u2019s shaped his campaign on an anti-Trump platform. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Whatever the case, one thing was clear: Mr. Trump is not giving up on his obsession with Canada, and the new government that emerges from Monday\u2019s vote will need to deal with a leader intent on both hurting Canada\u2019s economy with tariffs, and coveting its vast resources. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Trump\u2019s post Monday was met with a swift rebuke by Mr. Poilievre. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cPresident Trump, stay out of our election,\u201d the Conservative leader <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PierrePoilievre\/status\/1916854056183644583\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">said on X<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe only people who will decide the future of Canada are Canadians at the ballot box. Canada will always be proud, sovereign and independent and we will NEVER be the 51st state.
