Putin of Russia had ordered the cease-fire was met swiftly with skepticism by Ukrainian officials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThere is no reason to wait until May 8,\u201d President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.president.gov.ua\/en\/news\/mi-cinuyemo-zhittya-lyudej-ne-paradi-zvernennya-prezidenta-97417\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">said in his nightly address<\/a>, calling the announcement \u201canother attempt at manipulation\u201d amid the Trump administration\u2019s push for an end to the war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Zelensky noted that Ukraine had already agreed, at the urging of the United States, to an unconditional 30-day cease-fire \u2014 but that Russia had not. Nor did Russia agree to halt strikes on civilian targets, he added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cRussia has consistently rejected everything and continues to manipulate the world, trying to deceive the United States,\u201d said Mr. Zelensky, who has accused Mr. Putin of playing for time in cease-fire negotiations to strengthen his hand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">If Russia truly wants a cease-fire, Mr. Zelensky added, \u201cit must be immediate, full and unconditional \u2014 for at least 30 days to ensure it is secure and guaranteed.\u201d He also said that \u201cthe cease-fire should not be just for a few days, only to return to killing afterward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Kremlin spokesman, Dmitri S. Peskov, brushed off that suggestion on Tuesday by saying that Moscow would not agree to a longer cease-fire without hammering out more details.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cDetails matter if you\u2019re talking about a lengthy cease-fire: It would be difficult to agree to such a lengthy cease-fire without addressing those issues,\u201d Mr. Peskov told Russian news agencies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Apparently seeking to counter the notion that Russia was stonewalling Mr. Trump\u2019s peace efforts, Mr. Peskov also reiterated what he said was Russia\u2019s offer to hold direct talks with Ukraine.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Peskov said Russia was prepared to talk to Mr. Zelensky\u2019s government even though it considers him an illegitimate president, as elections have been suspended in Ukraine under martial law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"> \u201cIndeed, there are legal issues related to legitimacy,\u201d Mr. Peskov said. \u201cBut in this case, the interest in entering into peace settlement processes is above all else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">His comments came as Ukraine\u2019s Air Force said it had shot down 37 of the drones Russian forces launched overnight. Nine drones were downed in the Kyiv region, the local authorities said, where falling debris caused injuries and started a fire at a hotel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In the Dnipro region, a drone attack killed a 12-year-old girl. A 6-year-old girl and two adults were also wounded, according to the local authorities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Kremlin\u2019s announcement about the temporary truce came shortly after President Trump expressed frustration with Russia\u2019s continued bombardment of Ukraine.
