But on Sunday, that prosecutor, Abdelkrim Grini, said in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bfmtv.com\/police-justice\/meurtre-dans-une-mosquee-du-gard-le-suspect-s-est-rendu-le-procureur-d-ales-reagit-sur-bfmtv_VN-202504280176.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a TV interview<\/a> that the killing was being investigated as an \u201canti-Muslim act\u201d or \u201can act with Islamophobic connotations.\u201d Other motives are being explored, he added, including \u201ca fascination with death, a desire to kill and a desire to be considered a serial killer.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The suspect fled to Italy before turning himself in on Sunday at a police station in Pistoia, a small town near Florence, C\u00e9cile Gensac, the N\u00eemes prosecutor, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ProcureureNIMES\/status\/1916846983114879327\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> on Monday. The suspect was identified as a French national of Bosnian origin, born in 2004, who was previously unknown to the police, but nothing else about him or his views has been made public.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He has not yet been returned to France, which a prosecutor said could take weeks, or charged with a crime.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s an Islamophobic crime, it\u2019s an act of terrorism, and today we are afraid,\u201d Aminata Konat\u00e9-Boune, a spokesperson for Mr. Ciss\u00e9\u2019s Soninke ethnic group, said at <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4DfqXFjsh5I\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a news conference<\/a> with the victim\u2019s family on Tuesday. \u201cTomorrow, what will happen? Will they come knocking on our doors to kill us? Will there be a hunt for Muslims?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The killing happened the day after <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/24\/world\/europe\/french-school-knife-attack.html\" title=\"\">a girl was stabbed to death at a high school in Nantes<\/a>, allegedly by another student who was fascinated with Hitler. The school attack, which also wounded three others, prompted a strong and swift government reaction, prompting critics to accuse the government of a double standard.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Bruno Retailleau, France\u2019s conservative interior minister, posted a message on social media on the day of the attack at the mosque expressing support for the victim\u2019s family and the Muslim community.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But unlike in Nantes, where he visited the crime scene hours after the attack, he did not immediately rush to the mosque. Instead, he traveled on Sunday to Al\u00e8s, a nearby town, where he met with the local prosecutor and mayors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">President Emmanuel Macron of France did not comment on the attack until Sunday. \u201cI extend the support of the nation to his family and to our fellow citizens of the Muslim faith,\u201d he said on social media. \u201cRacism and hatred based on religion will never have a place in France. Freedom of worship is inviolable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Yoro Ciss\u00e9, the victim\u2019s cousin, told the news agency Agence France-Presse on Tuesday that no member of the government had contacted his family. \u201cWe want to feel safe; France is a country we love,\u201d he said. \u201cWe want to feel like everybody else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ten percent of France\u2019s population is Muslim, according to a 2023 study by the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.insee.fr\/fr\/statistiques\/6793308?sommaire=6793391\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">National Statistics Institute<\/a>. Islam has grown, at a time when more people profess no religious affiliation, to become the country\u2019s second-largest faith.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">France, which upholds its own brand of secularism known as \u201cla\u00efcit\u00e9\u201d \u2014 guaranteeing freedom of conscience and the neutrality of the state and of some public spaces \u2014 has an uneasy relationship with Islam. Muslim clothing like <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/06\/28\/arts\/in-france-debates-about-the-veil-hide-a-long-history.html\" title=\"\">headscarves<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/08\/28\/world\/europe\/france-ban-abaya-robes-schools.html\" title=\"\">full-length robes<\/a> have stirred endless debate and various attempts to ban them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe least we can say is that the authorities were slow to react,\u201d to the mosque killing, said Hakim El Karoui, a Muslim business consultant and the author of the book \u201cIslam, a French Religion.\u201d \u201cBeing on the side of Muslims is not popular when you are a politician in France.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">About 1,000 people marched silently in La Grand-Combe on Sunday to honor Mr. Ciss\u00e9\u2019s memory. But some deplored the absence of politicians, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liberation.fr\/societe\/religions\/a-la-grand-combe-une-marche-blanche-en-hommage-a-aboubakar-c-un-amour-dhomme-20250427_NX7NKOOFBNEX3IQYVT5E5E2NHQ\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">French news media reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Another demonstration was organized the same day at the Place de la R\u00e9publique in Paris at the behest of left-wing politicians and associations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThis violence is the result of an Islamophobic climate that has been cultivated for months,\u201d said Jean-Luc M\u00e9lenchon, the leader of the leftist France Unbowed party, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JLMelenchon\/status\/1916535293194440848\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">during the protest<\/a>.
