Veteran actor Paresh Rawal recently shared a surprising anecdote about losing out on a National Award despite being told he had won it. All because, as he was later informed, he hadn\u2019t \u201clobbied\u201d hard enough.H<\/span>e opened up about the confusion and disappointment that followed an incident during the early 1990s.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMain Mauritius mein shooting kar raha tha 93\u2026 94 mein\u2026 subah 7:30\u20138 baje phone aata hai\u2026 Mukesh Bhatt ka\u2026 saying \u2018Paresh, kya kar raha hai? Soya hai? Uth ja, uth ja\u2026 tereko <\/span>Sir<\/span><\/em> picture ke liye National Award mil raha hai (I was shooting in Mauritius in 1993 or 1994\u2026 Around 7:30 or 8 in the morning, I got a call from Mukesh Bhatt. He said, \u2018Paresh, what are you doing? Are you asleep? Wake up, wake up\u2026 you\u2019re getting a National Award for the film Sir\u2019),\u201d<\/em>\u00a0 he recalled. <\/span>While he was still processing the news, Rawal received another unexpected call \u2014 this time from filmmaker Kalpana Lajmi. She told him that he has been awarded the Best Actor National Award for <\/span>Sardar. <\/span>\u00a0Still unsure of what was going on, he double-checked: \u201cSardar ke liye? Ketan Mehta ki film ke liye <\/em><\/span>(<\/span>For Sardar? The film by Ketan Mehta<\/span>)?\u201d <\/span>To which Lajmi confirmed, \u201cHaan, Ketan Mehta ki film ke liye <\/em><\/span>(<\/span>Yes, for the film by Ketan Mehta<\/span>).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He was naturally on the seventh sky. However, when he returned to Delhi<\/a>, he learned that he was being given only one award \u2014 for <\/span>Sir<\/span>, and not for <\/span>Sardar<\/span>. Trying to get clarity, he asked filmmaker Ketan Mehta, critic Khalid Mohamed, director Shyam Benegal, and politician T. Subbarami Reddy what had gone wrong. <\/span>Surprisingly, even Ketan Mehta was unsure about the decision. But then, Paresh recalled, Subbarami Reddy said, \u201cYou people didn\u2019t lobby. We did hard lobby\u2026 aggressive lobby\u2026 and Mammootty<\/a> got it.\u201d He<\/span> admitted he was stunned. Sardar released in the year 1993; the award for Best Actor in 1994 went to Mammootty for Vidheyan and Ponthan Mada.<\/span><\/p>\n

Elaborating further on the state of National Awards in the country, Paresh said, \u201c<\/em><\/span>Mujhe Modi sahab ki government me nahi mila hai (award) 2013 me mila hai. Vo government ka award hai. National award ki main qadr karta hoon. National award me kabhi kabhi kya hota hai, technicalities \u2013 kisi ne bheji nahi thi film. Vo sab gandgi hoti hai. Khel khela jata hai. Lobby toh hoti hai\u2026 dabbakar hoti hai\u2026 sir jab Oscar mein hoti hai\u2026 toh yeh kya hai (<\/em>I have not received the award during Modi government but I got it in 2013. I respect this award. But it has technicalities, like no one sent the film. There is a mess, people play games. Lobbying happens\u2026 it happens aggressively\u2026 if it can happen at the Oscars, then why not here)?\u201d Despite the let-down, he said he doesn\u2019t hold grudges about awards anymore \u2014 because for him, real recognition comes from his peers. \u201cMeri life mein award kya hai ki Naseer bhai raat ko 11:30\u201312 baje phone karenge Mumbai<\/a> Meri Jaan dekh kar\u2026 \u2018Paresh, kya perform kiya\u2019\u2026 mera pait bhar jaata hai. Ya phir Om Puri saab bole, \u2018Aye, kya kaam kiya tune\u2019\u2026 pait bhar jaata hai\u2026 that\u2019s it, that\u2019s an award <\/em>(What counts as an award in my life is when Naseer Bhai calls me at 11:30\u201312 at night after watching Mumbai Meri Jaan and says, \u2018Paresh, what a performance\u2019\u2026 that fills my heart. Or when Om Puri says, \u2018Hey, what brilliant work you did\u2019\u2026 that\u2019s enough for me. That\u2019s an award).\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n
