U.S. lawmakers have said TikTok poses a security threat because of its ties to China.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Apple said that China\u2019s internet regulator, the Cyberspace Administration, ordered the removal of WhatsApp and Threads from its app store because of national security concerns. Apple said that it complied.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe are obligated to follow the laws in the countries where we operate, even when we disagree,\u201d an Apple spokesman said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A Meta spokesman directed requests for comment to Apple. The Wall Street Journal <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/tech\/apple-removes-whatsapp-threads-from-china-app-store-on-government-orders-a0c02100?mod=hp_lead_pos10\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">earlier reported<\/a> Apple\u2019s removal of the apps.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">China has long blocked American apps and technology companies, including Facebook and Instagram, which are also owned by Meta. WhatsApp, one of the world\u2019s most popular messaging services, and Threads were not used widely in China, which has an elaborate system to block foreign apps and websites inside its borders, known as the Great Firewall. In China, WhatsApp is dwarfed by WeChat, the Chinese-owned messaging app.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Still, until Friday, Chinese users were able to download WhatsApp and use it with the assistance of a virtual private network, or VPN, which are used to set up secure web connections and view prohibited content inside China.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-798hid etfikam0\">This is a developing story.
