The area also hosts a number of Iranian military sites.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In the early 17th century, Shah Abbas I, known as Abbas the Great, of the Safavid Dynasty, set to work <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2001\/12\/05\/world\/isfahan-journal-drought-dries-up-a-city-s-river-and-sears-its-soul.html?searchResultPosition=13\" title=\"\">creating a showpiece in Isfahan<\/a>. He built the country\u2019s most famous mosques, including the stunning Imam Mosque, capped by onion-shaped domes, and the Ali Qapu Palace. Shah Abbas and his son also built bridges to arch over the Zayanderud River, whose waters filled the fountains outside the palace and the mosques, and irrigated their gardens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">That has made the city, home to roughly two million people today, one of the tourist centers of Iran.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Isfahan is also a center of missile production, research and development for Iran. That<span class=\"css-8l6xbc evw5hdy0\">  <\/span>includes the assembly of Shahab medium-range missiles, which can reach Israel and beyond. And it is the site of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/01\/29\/world\/middleeast\/iran-drone-strike-israel.html\" title=\"\">four small nuclear research<\/a> facilities, all supplied by China many years ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Natanz uranium <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/04\/13\/world\/middleeast\/iran-nuclear-natanz.html\" title=\"\">enrichment<\/a> site is also in Isfahan Province, along with an air base that has long hosted Iran\u2019s fleet of American-made F-14 Tomcats \u2014 purchased before the 1979 Islamic Revolution, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-israel-mideast-tensions-4-19-2024-a7ccbae2e2844bab089e8e4377a24ddb\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">according to The Associated Press.<\/a> A Russian-made S-300 air defense battery has also been seen in Isfahan, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iiss.org\/globalassets\/media-library---content--migration\/files\/research-papers\/2023\/04\/watching-iran-the-isr-gulf.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">according to an assessment<\/a> by the International Institute for Strategic Studies.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Israeli attack early on Friday \u2014 which Iranian news agencies said had not hit Isfahan\u2019s nuclear facilities \u2014 was not the first time the area has been targeted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In January 2023, Israel carried out <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/01\/29\/world\/middleeast\/iran-drone-strike-israel.html?searchResultPosition=9\" title=\"\">a drone attack<\/a> on a military facility in the middle of Isfahan, according to senior intelligence officials who were familiar with the dialogue between Israel and the United States about the strike. The facility\u2019s purpose was not clear, and neither was how much damage <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/01\/28\/world\/middleeast\/iran-drone-attack.html\" title=\"\">that attack<\/a> caused.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">At the time, Iran made no effort to hide the fact that an attack had happened but said it had done little damage.
