The Senate is expected to pass the legislation as early as tomorrow, and it is almost certain to become law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As part of the package, the House also advanced a bill that would force the Chinese company ByteDance, parent of TikTok, to either sell the app or risk a nationwide ban in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In Ukraine, the vote was <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/21\/world\/europe\/ukraine-military-aid-bill.html\" title=\"\">met with relief<\/a> as troops are swiftly running out of weapons and munitions. The Pentagon has said it could resume sending weapons to Ukraine within days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI really do believe the intel,\u201d said Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican, who <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/21\/us\/politics\/mike-johnson-turnaround.html\" title=\"\">marshaled bipartisan support<\/a> to pass the bill. \u201cI think that Vladimir Putin would continue to march through Europe if he were allowed.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Details:<\/strong> The legislation includes $60 billion for Kyiv; $26 billion for Israel and humanitarian aid for civilians in conflict zones, including Gaza; and $8 billion for the Indo-Pacific region.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"css-7ad88g e1mu4ftr0\"\/><\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h2 class=\"css-9ycfei eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-10ddcd3e\">Iran seems to stand down after Israel\u2019s attack<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Iran appears to have <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/21\/world\/middleeast\/iran-economy-israel-war.html\" title=\"\">chosen de-escalation after Israel\u2019s retaliatory attack<\/a> on Friday. Iranian officials and state news media downplayed the attack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Israel also seems to have tried to skirt a broader war. Its strike \u2014 a response to Iran\u2019s volley, which itself was a reply to Israel\u2019s deadly strike on the Iranian embassy compound in Damascus, Syria \u2014 was notably limited. It damaged an air defense system at a military base near Isfahan, in central Iran.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt remains to be seen whether this latest tit-for-tat will create some sort of deterrence for both sides,\u201d Farnaz Fassihi, our U.N. bureau chief, who covers the shadow war, told my colleague Daniel E.
