A group of 21 organisations, including Broadband India Forum, Deepstrat, the Internet Freedom Foundation, and the Dialogue, as well as some individuals, have written to the government asking for a five-month extension to the May 15 deadline to provide inputs to the draft of the Digital Competition Bill.
In the letter addressed to the ministry of corporate affairs, the organisations and individuals have argued that the extension in the comments submission timeline was necessary to allow stakeholders to conduct research, involve small businesses, consumers and gig workers as well as study the impact of ex-ante regulations across the world and its efficacies.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is also likely to impact non-digital domains, owing to their inextricable relationship with digital counterparts, and thus could consequently impact jobs and income generation opportunities created across sectors,\u201d the letter has argued. ET has seen a copy of the letter.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month in April, the government had extended till May 15 the timeline for the submission of stakeholder comments <\/a>on the draft of the Digital Competition Bill. The original deadline for submission of comments was April 15.<\/p>\n

In March this year, the committee on digital competition law<\/a> (CDCL) had proposed a new ex-ante regulation to check unfair competition and big tech’s influence in the digital space.<\/p>\n

The draft regulation sought to place several obligations on big tech companies by designating them under a new category of systemically significant digital enterprises (SSDE) in core digital services and adding several obligations.<\/p>\n

In the letter sent on Monday, the organisations have also requested that since the proposed regulations will overlap with some of the tech and sector-specific regulations, a \u201cwhole of government\u201d approach was necessary for effective design and implementation of the digital competition law.<\/div>\n
