India<\/a> may not react abruptly and likely to continue with its measured approach for the time being amid apprehensions that Maldives president Mohamed Muizzu<\/a> armed with his People’s National Congress (PNC<\/a>) massive Parliamentary victory<\/a> may harden position.
The PNC won more than a two-third majority in the House for which elections were held on Sunday.<\/p>\n

The result may enable Muizzu to push policies through the parliament. New Delhi has been closely watching Male’s tilt towards Beijing<\/a> ever since Muizzu was elected to the top post last year.<\/p>\n

New Delhi, it is understood, will have a measured approach for the time being, it is understood. The Maldives, India’s key maritime neighbour in the Southern Indian Ocean Region (IOR), occupies a special place in its initiatives like SAGAR<\/a>‘ (Security and Growth for All in the Region) and Neighbourhood First policy<\/a>. India is a key supplier of all essential items to Maldives besides being source of tourists and closest destination for Maldivian patients and students.<\/p>\n

Asked about New Delhi-Male relations after Muizzu’s election, External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar<\/a> had said neighbours need each other. “History and geography are very powerful forces. There is no escape from that,” he had said.<\/p>\n

The Majlis or Parliament exercises supervisory powers over the Maldivian executive and can hold up presidential decisions. Before this election, PNC was part of an alliance that was in the minority in the Parliament. Muizzu did not have the numbers in the last Majlis to push through policies.The last Majlis was dominated by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), led by Muizzu’s predecessor Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. MDP performed below expectations.The MDP-dominated House blocked many of Muizzu’s plans and members of the Opposition publicly flagged and criticised his anti-India position.<\/p>\n

Muizzu had acknowledged India’s financial support to Male and said “India will remain the Maldives’ closest ally”. At the end of last year, Maldives owes India around $400.9 million.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
