The investigation into the Nehal Hiremath murder case that has sent political temperatures soaring across Karnataka<\/a> will now be handled by the CID<\/a>, Chief minister Siddaramaiah<\/a> announced on Monday. A special court will be formed to \u201cprovide speedy justice,\u201d he said.
Meanwhile, BJP<\/a> heavyweights held statewide protests over the issue, alleging that the government was trying to stall the investigation and shield the culprits in order to appease minorities. While state party president BY Vijayendra led the protests in Mysuru, leader of opposition R Ashoka spearheaded the agitation in Tumakuru. Former CM Basavaraj Bommai led a protest in Haveri from where he is contesting the LS polls. <\/p>\n

The saffron party has demanded that the case be handed over to the CBI. Responding to the demands, deputy CM DK Shivakumar said the state government has no objection to a CBI probe<\/a> into the murder, but would handle the case independently. <\/p>\n

Hiremath, a 23-year-old college student in Hubballi<\/a>\u2019s BVB College, was stabbed to death on the campus by accused Fayaz Khondunaik<\/a> on Thursday. He allegedly attacked her for rejecting him, and has since been arrested. The BJP has been cornering the ruling Congress on the issue, taking the \u2018Love Jihaad\u2019 angle, while the CM and the deputy CM DK have denied the allegation. <\/p>\n

BJP national president JP Nadda on Sunday called out the Congress party, saying people would not forgive its appeasement politics. \u201cThe state government should hand over the case to the CBI if the State Police is incapable of a fair probe,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Neha\u2019s father Niranjan Hiremath, a Congress Councillor of Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation, also demanded the transfer of the police commissioner for alleged negligence in the case, saying he was \u201closing faith,\u201d and that the authorities were trying to divert the case. \u201cGive it to the CBI if you cannot do it. The commissioner in this case is a lady, even then she is not taking a girl’s murder seriously… She is working under some pressure,\u201d he said on Saturday. <\/p><\/div>\n
