Venture capital<\/a> investment in India doubled sequentially in the March quarter<\/a>, touching $3.2 billion across 354 deals, outperforming a subdued global market<\/a>, according to a new report.
A total of 313 deals worth $1.6 billion were closed in the December quarter, according to KPMG<\/a> Private Enterprise Venture Pulse report.<\/p>\n

Fintech<\/a> continued to attract investor attention in India though marked by smaller deal sizes with key transactions such as KreditBee ($209 million), SK Finance ($160 million), and Perfios ($80 million).<\/p>\n

\u201cAs expected, India has seen an uptick in VC investments despite the deal activity being muted in Asia. This will only increase in the coming quarters given our robust GDP growth, strong demographics and expectation of stable government at the Centre. AI, powertech, healthtech and agritech are some key sectors to watch out for,\u201d said Nitish Poddar, partner and national leader, private equity, KPMG in India.<\/p>\n

Globally, VC investments fell to $75.9 billion across 7,520 deals in Q1 2024 amid concerns over geopolitical tensions, limited exit opportunities, and reduced investments in later deal stages. However, cleantech and artificial intelligence (AI) stood out with substantial investments, accounting for eight of the top ten deals worldwide during the quarter.<\/p>\n

The report highlighted that 10 of the world\u2019s new unicorn companies in Q1 2024 were AI-focused startups, with the US leading with more than half of the new unicorns. These included companies such as Celestial AI, Together AI and Perplexity. China, France, and India also saw new AI-focused unicorns such as Miotech, Mistral and Bhavish Aggarwal’s Krutrim.<\/p>\n

Region wise, VC investment<\/a> fell in the Americas and Asia last quarter while rising in Europe. Americas garnered nearly half of global VC funding in Q1 2024 ($38.2 billion across 3,205 deals), with the US accounting for the majority of this amount ($36.6 billion across 2,882 deals). VC investments in Asia-Pacific slumped to a seven-year low of $18.9 billion across 2,305 deals, while Europe saw $17.9 billion across 1,798 deals.The quarter, however, saw reduced global exit activity to $30.7 billion from $49.8 billion in Q4 2023, the report stated.<\/p>\n

Further, the report pointed out emerging trends for the June quarter, including heightened investor interest in the crypto and blockchain sector, defence and security technologies, and artificial intelligence. It emphasised the importance of monitoring the IPO market and potential upticks in small-scale M&A activities, anticipating increased pressure on VC firms to enhance funding and opportunities arising in distressed M&A scenarios.<\/p>\n

\u201cGiven how dry the exit environment has been for the last eighteen months, it\u2019s no surprise VC investors are being very conservative in their deal making right now,\u201d said Conor Moore, global head of KPMG Private Enterprise and KPMG International.<\/p>\n

\u201cVC investors, including corporate investors, are really tightening their purse strings, particularly at the later deal stages. The only real exceptions we\u2019re seeing right now are companies focused on AI or cleantech -which may soon extend to include Cybersecurity as corporates look to manage their AI-driven cyber risk.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
