Gen. Aharon Haliva, Israel\u2019s director of military intelligence, resigned<\/a> over the intelligence failures that preceded the Hamas-led attacks on Israel on Oct. 7. He is the most senior official to offer to step down after the assault.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">General Haliva had become a symbol of the Israeli establishment\u2019s failure to prevent the deadliest attack in the country\u2019s history. His resignation was expected to heighten pressure on other senior figures, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, to take greater responsibility for their roles in the catastrophe.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h2 class=\"css-9ycfei eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-417639b7\">U.K. approved Rwanda deportation bill<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Britain\u2019s Conservative government finally <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/22\/world\/europe\/uk-rwanda-deportation-bill-migrants.html\" title=\"\">won passage of its Rwanda deportation bill<\/a>, enshrining a law that human-rights campaigners say is inhumane, immigration experts say is unworkable and legal critics say has corroded the country\u2019s reputation for rule of law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The legislation is designed to allow the government to put some asylum seekers on one-way flights to Rwanda, where they would have their claims processed. If they were then granted refugee status, they would be resettled in Rwanda, not Britain.
